Like last year's effort, we're compiling your votes to elect 2010's Game of the Year (or Games, as it were) for our annual GOTY feature. We've split the year's releases into a handful of categories, with an option to add any games we might have missed in a selected field, but the power to choose your Game of the Year is in your hands.

We've also added two new categories this year, the first is in celebration of 10 years of gaming (because AusGamers has been around that long), and the second is to vote for your most anticipated game of 2011. Voting will be open for a few weeks over the break, and we'll be running a full feature early next year with the usual Editor's Picks as well (hit this link for last year's).

Click here to cast your vote!

I got really excited, then realised the only games I've played on that list are Mass Effect 2 (woo), Civ 5 (meh), and a bit of Cataclysm (same old woo). When I was a lad with a full head of hair this would never have happened. (oddly I have the time, hardware, and money for it now too - everything is backwards)

edit: Oh yeah!
cant believe heroes of Newerth was not on the list :(

I played a ton of league of legends!

Tough call for GoTD, but I had to go with Quake 3 (even though it was technically December 99). It was just so technically robust, lived strong for years on the back of user-content and mod support and served as a framework for first person shooters for years longer still. Hell there's still some of it's engine left under the Call of Duty: Black Ops' hood.

That was how I measured it as well - the game I played the most and got the most enjoyment out of.

I had to go with Left 4 Dead, because I played the s*** out of that and enjoyed the co-op aspect more than anything I have in a really, really long time.

My second choice probably would have been Battlefield 1942 - I think it did more than anything else this decade for FPS, opening them up in a whole new way.

Metroid Prime for me. Easily one of the most underrated games of the past 10 years. It pushed the GameCube technically, had art-direction second to none, amazing level design, a haunting soundtrack, matured the Metroid series and was bloody challenging!

After that I would have picked Resident Evil 4 because of what it did for the third-person action genre on the whole

Yeah that was my reasoning, even if at first I thought "KotOR, pokemon sapphire, Civ 4, Thief 2, Rome/Medieval 2: TW" - WoW has just been something amazing. And addictive.

I put down HL2 for game of the decade, if you go by most played alone you'd only get multiplayer titles and I don't think many multiplayer titles are actually as well made as the best single player games despite getting more game time.

Portal or ME2 would have been my second choices.

Worst game of the year was FFXIII for sure.

FPS: Singularity. Loved the storyline and the half life esk feel to it. Was very well done, and greatly under-published.

Action/Adventure: Darksiders. Again, loved the feel of it, excellent story, and wicked abilities/mobs.

RPG was WoW: Cata obviously xD Can't be choosing something else after playing for 6 years and finally getting new 1-60. So much lore needed to be updated.

RTS was skipped because I felt there weren't any real big hitters this year, and SC2 was a let down at best. in my opinion though :)

Skipped sports, hate the idea of playing sports in virtual means.

Skipped fighting, don't play nor fancy those titles.

For Puzzle, I chose other and went for Super Meat Boy. By far the most fun I've had for $15 this year. So much fun for a puzzle game made by couple of dudes.

Steam arcade was Super Meat Boy again.

Skipped handheld.

For most anticipated it was too damn hard! I chose Brink. Going to be such an awesome fps game. Mix of Mirror's Edge cross between UT cross between TF2. Can not wait! But also looking forward to Homefront, Batman: Arkham City, Portal 2, Duke Nukem Forever, SWTOR, Dead Space 2 and L.A. Noire. Too much goodness coming from 2011!

World of Warcraft for Game of the Decade and most played, been playing since release :)

I thought the source engine was much more impressive technologically... That ran amazing on some very old hardware, and is still scaling strong today afaik. (edit: Although I didn't much enjoy HL2 tbh, loved the first)

Fighting game: Street Fighter 4
FPS: CoD - Black Ops Mutiplayer (i make no apologies to the COD haters)
Action/Adventure: God of War 3
Sports/Racing Game: FIFA 11/ Forza 3, though i should've put Burnout Paradise (it was 2008-2009 but i don't care)
Casual game: DK Country Returns
Puzzle/arcade: Trials HD (2009 title but again i don't care)

Most hours played: Probably Street Fighter 4. I played the s*** out of it with a control pad. Then i bought a fight stick and played 2 s**** out of it. Then i bought Super Street Fighter 4 and played 16 s**** out of it. I've stopped playing since but my fingers ache to this day.

Game of the Decade: Not sure, too hard. Probably Counter Strike (as sad as that sounds)

BF1942 was/is amazing, ground breaking when it was released because there were no other FPS games that had infantry, vehicles, ships (including submarines), and aircraft. The mods the game spawn are not only legendary in their scope but also in their variety. One minute you're flying an X wing then blasting everything with a Bradley, stitching up a Zeppelin with a Sopwith Camel afterwards ripping down the interstate with a Gatling armed hot rod.

It is/was the best FPS game of the Decade but not the best game. I'd have to give that to World of Warcraft.

Except 2000 is last decade. This decade is 2001-2010. How hard is it to count from 1 to 10?

The second half is true. A decade is 10 years, doesn't have to start on any particular date, but if we are using say now (or Dec 31) as our point of reference, then it's 2001 to 2010

If however in the first part you are implying that all decades start on the 1, that is actually really determined by whether or not you think there was a 0 year or not.

ie.
1BC 0 1 AD
vs.
1BC 1AD

And no one has the answer to that, so either is fine.
Scooter
Posted 09:03am 22/12/10
Released on PS2 in 2002 anyway, so that counts :p Even if I did play it on PC.
Dan picked a '99 game anyway :o

I defiantly spent more time in FFXI and I really enjoyed that time, but overall I'd rate Deus Ex better. And was playing it well into this decade.

When I think of 'The Ninties' I think of 90-99, when I think of 'The Twenties' I think of 20-29. Each to their own though!

not too many outside the Crytek studios but it was definitely a step in the right direction as far as realistic environments went, not to mention prettyness.

My other game for gameplay i think diablo 2 wins hands down.

Wrong, the Gregorian calendar doesn't have a year 0. And if you're using ISO 8601 you don't have BC/AD, it goes go -0001, 0000, 0001, 0002. So for ISO 8601, year 0 is 1 BC in the Gregorian calendar.

wtb more fields for game of the decade, could easily make that a top 3/5/10.

biggest decision for me was strategy game, dow2 was awesome and i sunk many hours into that, and sc2 was similarly awesome but ran out of people to play that with co-op style.

Hard to choose the action adventure, but the casual/puzzle/whatever thing was even harder. It came to a choice between sam n max and modnation.... wtf?!

Funnily enough the hardest choice was the XBLA/PSN/WiiWare/Steam category. This was definitely the year of DLC. It was a hard choice between LIMBO, Super Meat Boy and Case Zero. Actually not that hard, but I loved all of those games.

Did counterstrike come out this decade or last? If it's not CS then it must be WoW....

In other words, I am right ? and wrong about me being wrong ?
Either you use gregorian and hence believe there is no 0 year.
Or use ISO and do believe there is a year 0.

Thus "gregorian" milleniums/centuries/decadesstart on the 1, eg. 2001, not 2000.
And Iso ones can start on a 0...

But it is totally irrelevant, you can say in 2012 the best games of the last decade were, and that just means the last 10 years.

All that matters is no way can 99 count, 2000 shouldn't count either unless we are going with 11 year decades.

Frak yeah I loved Ridd***, very Thief like but with it's own unique twists.

Loved Half Life 1 (which I think was 1998 btw), but the second I found pretty uninteresting, despite amazing technological work behind it.
