Ramattra is the next hero coming to Overwatch 2, and will join the line-up when Season 2 kicks off on December 6. The announcement came as part of the Overwatch League Grand Finals over the weekend, with Ramattra’s origin story serving as the teaser.

Which covers his past as a protector of omnics. Although actual in-game footage and full details on his abilities are still to come - what we do know is that Ramattra will have two forms - Omnic and Nemesis.

Originally a war machine, Ramattra shed his munitions for a shield to protect his people by promoting peace and tranquility. His ideals weren’t far removed from his fellow Shambli monk, Zenyatta. However, Ramattra’s story is one of hardship, trauma, and a magnified view of humanity’s harsh realities.

Harmony was replaced by dissonance, and Ramattra began to approach his convictions from a more pragmatic angle—justifying any means necessary to defend his fellow omnics. As the leader of Null Sector, Ramattra boasts incredible support from his people, and he is primed to impose his philosophies on our world.

In addition to being a new Tank to the Overwatch 2 roster, part of the fantasy of playing Ramattra is the ability to go all Incredible Hulk.

“When we start hero development, we are thinking of the fantasy of a Hero,” Dion Rogers, Art Director on Overwatch 2 explains. “With Reinhardt, it was about being a Knight or a protector of the team. We've always known Ramattra would be a Tank because of the story we were developing for him, he's a protector of his people. So it felt right that he would be a Tank hero.”

“But what you'll find with his Nemesis form when he turns into this big hulking hero, there's a fantasy there of the Hulk,” Dion Rogers continues. “Or, this more neutral form, but still dangerous. This led to some of the art designs that we chose, where we really wanted the two different forms - Omnic plus his Nemesis form - to feel very different from each other, but the same hero. His fantasy is this “Hulk out mode”, and as you're playing the game, when is the right time to do those swaps from Nemesis to Omnic?”

And with new heroes coming to Overwatch 2, expect the world and story to expand in the lead-up to the big story-driven PvE modes and co-op missions coming in 2023. “He is the leader of Null Sector, the force of omnics fighting for omnic freedom that you've seen throughout the course of Overwatch's story,” Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie, Lead Narrative Designer says. “You're going to learn a lot more Null Sector, about what they're fighting for, and bout why that fight is so vital for the omnic people. And more about how the world sees Null Sector, why what they're doing is dangerous and frightening to a lot of people, but to them is necessary.”
