Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate is the next Magic release, arriving on June 10, and adds a dose of classic Dungeons & Dragons into the mix whilst continuing the Commander focus of 2020’s Commander Legends set. Commander is a very cool MTG format in that you build your deck around a hero, a legendary creature, with a mind towards taking advantage of their abilities and play-style.
Taking inspiration from classic D&D and the classic Baldur’s Gate videogames (Baldur’s Gate III is coming sometime next year), one of the new mechanics introduced with this new set is called Initiative. This will give players a chance to venture into a special dungeon, the Undercity, to reap rewards. Only one player can hold “the initiative” at any given time. And there’s also dice rolling, very D&D. There’s a lot to it, including a new Background mechanic that builds on the Partner system, so be sure to head here for more info.
Also, you can watch the following reveal which is chock full of D&D and Magic goodness.
D&D storytelling meets Magic's most social format. Turn your next Commander night into an adventure with iconic D&D characters, powerful spells, and unforgettable moments.
And with that our friends over at Wizards of the Coast have, err, commanded us to bring you this Legendary Creature card reveal. Without further ado, here’s a look at one of the new Legendary Creature cards coming.
Mahadi, Emporium Master
Legendary Creature - Cat Devil
“Welcome to the Wandering Emporium. Feel free to browse the bazaar. We have everything a lost soul could want, need, or afford.”
At the beginning of your end step, create a Treasure token for each character that dies this turn. (It’s an artifact, “Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color”)
As per above, Treasure tokens can become a powerful mechanic and way to boost your mana pool once the action heats up.

It goes without saying that Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons go together like, well, two things that go together. But with the Commander format, and choosing a hero, there’s an extra layer of RPG goodness that plays into the whole D&D character stuff. And creating your adventurer and identity – your own story. Like the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set from last year, players will venture into the Forgotten Realms once again - specifically Baldur’s Gate.
