The Xbox One could soon be seeing external storage support according to a recent comment on Reddit by Microsoft's Xbox frontman Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb.

No timeframe was sadly given, however Nelson did state that the feature is on its way. “External game storage is coming soon. I need to check on media support,” he said.

Further in the thread, Hryb said that he had no news on regional voice support, but did hint at plenty of updates to come. “Lots of good work going on to make the console even better – some you’ll see soon, some will show up later. But: it is all good stuff."

What is Hyrb's position at MS?
As a bystander to the 'new gen' consoles, I can only say it's been good to see the approach to media releases that MS has had (at and post launch) for the XBOne.

Some of the little stuff still seems to be nagging at the XBOne, I'm still disappointed that the PC drivers for the XBOne's controllers isn't 'in the wild' as yet; however I AM over the moon to know that it's something that they're working on!

There's so much potential for both parties (Talking MS and Sony here), but as there's very little content of interest (that I can't already get on PC) on either and then paying for XBL/PSN+ subscriptions just doesn't make any sense to me; I'll continue to sit on the fence for now.

ahhhh next gen consoles with 4 generation ago's capabilities. Why do people put up with this s*** time and again? It's 2014 ffs, not 1814, external storage should be there out of the box.

On one hand, my 'first gen 60GB PS3' has a 500Gb HDD in it...

On the other; Whoop, you shouldn't go laptop shopping.

audi, your right; it is news, because thats the news topic we're in. its a topic about adding external HDD support. ironic, isnt it? Ridiculous statements like 'first gen 60 gig ps3', well no, the ps3 is 7th gen. its 1st revision was 60 gigs. the first gen is atari 2600 etc, 4 generations ago, (we're in the 8th generation now) is the snes and megadrive. So basically im dealing with one dude that thinks snes/megadrive had external hdd support, and another dude who had a 60 gig ps3 back in 1982.

So im left to the following conclusions; a) hyperbole is overused, often to the detriment of the argument, b) I shouldnt argue with every idiot on the internet. but, c) Consoles get a bad rap by every activist with a keyboard and i consider that bulls***.

If you consider the current consoles eighth generation, the Atari 2600 was second generation. Counting backwards isn't that hard.

It's well deserved here. External storage should have been supported at launch. It's not a new concept they couldn't have anticipated. Microsoft supported it on the Xbox 360 (in a dumb and limited fashion). Even Nintendo (who you would expect to drag their feet on something like this), had external storage support at launch for the Wii U.

You'd orbit Jupiter if you knew the PS4 controllers pair up with 0 drivers and 0 effort.
Not zero drivers, just standard HID drivers which are included with your OS. You miss out on proper XInput support because of this.

Guess some players need more storage now there is more games coming out. I still only have one game on my HD and it says 4.5% used with 348.2 GB free.

No thanks, I'll wait for the MS drivers for windows.
(The levels of integration these drivers have in MS products is where the 'feature' is; that is to say, not just 'oh hey, I press 'a' and after the rigmarole(sp?) I've been through, the character jumps')

y'all are noobs. I meant out of the box the consoles are crippled as f*** and about as useful as a sega megadrive. Yet people still buy the s*** hoping it gets fixed / features get added (or in Sony's case, taken away olollolo) in a later patch. Stand up to this sort of s***, boycott everything that doesn't work the way it should. But that'll never happen because people en masse are idiots.

It plays games, so I'm happy. Like Jeffro, I got tonnes of space still on the hard drive in my XBone and by the time I need more, external hard drive support will be there, sounds all good to me.

I'd rather have it sooner and have these sorts of things added as needed than have to wait another 6 months, especially when they're things that are entirely un-necessary to have at launch. I was more annoyed at its lack of a good media player, that seemed like a big step backwards from XBox 360. It doesn't really affect me personally since I've got a bazillion things plugged into my tv (or even built into the tv itself) that can play and stream media, but for someone who buys the XBone as their total media solution (especially considering thats kinda what MS was pushing it as in their 'Tv Tv Tv' demonstration when they revealed it), I'd be a bit miffed.

Talking of controllers and support for controllers, i've got a cronuxmax here that i've barely used. Allows you to play various controllers on different consoles and PC, e.g. ps3 controller on xbox 360 etc...
