Popular 2D sandbox indie hit Terraria will be gaining a sequel, according to a new interview with developer Andrew "Redigit" Spinks. The news comes through a recent interview with
(thanks Eurogamer), in which Spinks reveals that while development hasn't officially started yet, Terraria 2 is in the works.
"I'm super excited about starting Terraria 2," he told RPS. "It's a ways out, but it's gonna have a lot in common with the original. It's gonna be quite different as well. I really want to expand on the whole Terraria universe."
Speaking further with RPS, Spinks reveals that while the idea for Terraria 2 is there it won't be finding the light for awhile. According to the interview further development time is being placed on the original Terraria, which has just been updated with a
major 1.2 update that added cute penguins among many other objects.
“It’s a tricky question, though. When do you stop working on one game and start working on something new? I honestly have no idea. Right now, I’m having a lot of fun with it. Everyone on my team is really enjoying working on Terraria 1. But I have looked into maybe hiring another small team to continue updates while I move onto Terraria 2. So that’s also an option.”
While work is currently on-going with Terraria, Spinks did reveal that Update 1.2 will be the last "major" update for original Terraria, with only a select few small updates to be had in the future. Mentions of a final boss and a Halloween theme were revealed in the interview, but Spinks believes that development on Terraria 2 will begin "maybe three or four months out."
“There’s a lot of stuff I’m locked into with Terraria. The way loot works, the way character progression works. In Terraria 2, I really want to have infinite worlds so you’re not just stuck to one world. You can travel anywhere. I want more biome diversity in that, too. There’s a lot of stuff [I want to add and change].”
