Valve Software has sent word that they have three announcements to make next week, with the first due on Monday (Pacific US time - hopefully not Valve Time), and a teaser page has been established with a countdown timer on it and some unfamiliar imagery and symbols.

A message from Valve's media contact Doug Lombardi explained that "As Gabe mentioned a few days ago, we will be talking next week about the steps we're taking to make Steam more accessible on televisions and in the living room", and points to the teaser page which bears the headline "The Steam Universe is Expanding in 2014" and the following note:
Last year, we shipped a software feature called Big Picture, a user-interface tailored for televisions and gamepads. This year we’ve been working on even more ways to connect the dots for customers who want Steam in the living-room. Soon, we’ll be adding you to our design process, so that you can help us shape the future of Steam.
Earlier this week, Valve head honcho Gabe Newell gave a presentation at LinuxCon, confidently posturing that the company sees the Linux platform as the future for gaming, and saying "Next week we’re going to be rolling out more information about how we get there and what are the hardware opportunities that we see for bringing Linux into the living room and potentially pointing further down the road to how we can get it even more unified with mobile".

shape the future of Steam.

No more PC support, will only run on dedicated hardware
No more keyboard and mouse support, will require gamepads only
Half life 3

The future of gaming is consoles

Er, I think Gabe could afford Carmack. I mean, sure Carmack is a highly respected programmer and engineer, but in recent times with iD being bought out and taking a back seat in the bigger scheme of things I wouldn't say he can't be afforded. Besides, money wasn't a big concern for Carmack, he just wants to make engines and every other part of the business he doesn't care about.

Im guessing:

* Big Picture/Hardware for TV Steam
* More on Linux
* Half Life 3

I still don't understand the obsession with Half Life games. They were boring as.

You are bad at liking good games. Half Life 2 was amazing.

Even a small piece of HL3 news would cause me to release my load. Pls make it happen Valve.

have you ever been to the coast and seen those sign's saying 'only a surfer knows the feeling' ?

well it's kinda like that, except s/surfer/gamer

and it's not an obsession, it's a hobby. obsession would imply something you couldn't go without, like the oil obsession/addiction.

anything you spend enough time and money on inevitably will become some kind of obsession or intense like :/

now, can you stop with your argumentative debasing of gaming discussion on a games forum ?

Building up a Mini ITX system to take advantage of this one. With the games list sharing, this will only be a good thing.

It's basically a console OS. But I assume it will support mouse and keyboard, which the single most important difference.

My gut still says this is bad for gaming, just encouraging more console/living room like gaming.

It didn't grab me, I had no "oh god, I've really gotta finish this game" feeling. I played it a few times, and then never went back to it. I possibly should give it another shot.

Will buy another SSD and boot SteamOS when I need to use Steam.

Always thought a Gaming OS would be a good idea but it will need high tier top quality 3rd party support for it to happen.

Same here. I never totally got into the HL / HL2 games. I very rarely ever finish single player games though so my opinion is worth very little.

Ok stupid question about steamos but, will it support windows games? or are they going the whole linux binaries only route? Man, I remember back in early 2000's? the whole linux craze where you could get opengl drivers for all the good video cards and all the decent games had linux binaries available. Pretty funny if it all goes back to those days and all the linux nerds cream themselves over it. I might just install linux again just to piss my brother off who looooooves windows (hates macs + linux).

Same here, I loved HL1, HL2 felt like a chore with a creepy adoring female companion which made the whole silent-protagonist thing really weird. Got episode 1 & 2 during a steam sale and quit about 15 minutes into episode 1.

Felt like I was the only gamer on the planet who wasn't that excited about HL3. Though the half life 3 confirmed conspiracies are kind of funny.

windows only games is what the streaming functionality is for.
