Chris Roberts, the creator of the popular Wing Commander games, and the figurehead behind the recently successful Star Citizen Kickstarter project, has come out in support of two fellow crowdfunded projects --22 Cans' Project GODUS, and the competing space-sim hopeful Elite: Dangerous-- offering words of support, and a backing pledge for both games.
In a lengthy and encouraging
blog update, Roberts goes into depth about why he wishes the best for both projects, and how he believes there's room enough for both space simluation to co-exist.
You may say hey Chris, why do you want to support a competing project? Well I believe the world is big enough for multiple quality Space Sims. Having to compete against the Star Wars X-Wing games from Larry Holland certainly didn’t harm Wing Commander and I feel Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous are different types / styles of games. Star Citizen is more focused on a “crafted” approach to the universe – more detail, cinematic flair and more unique characters and locations whereas Elite will follow a more procedural approach which will allow it to have a much larger galaxy to explore as a lot of content will be computer generated.
And some kind words on 22 Cans' founder Peter Molyneux:
I’ve known Peter for many years. Back when Origin and Bullfrog were acquired by EA and we used to travel the world on press tours promoting our respective games. He is definitely very enthusiastic, which can get him into trouble sometimes, as he can over promise, but it always comes from the right place – he wants to push the possibilities and he has a childlike wonder with doing this.
Project GODUS has recently reached it's goal, and is now looking toward some stretch targets, while
Elite: Dangerous still has a ways to, with over £430,000 left to raise in just over two weeks.
