AusGamers received a tip off from reader Bettapust that there was trouble a brewin' at Krome once more, which was essentially resonated by unclebobsticle in our forums, and that trouble comes in the form of more lay-offs (more than 50 in total we're being told), a loss of the license for The Force Unleashed 2 (presumably on Wii, and reportedly as a result of poor review scores for other Krome titles) and a need to rely heavily on government funding as the studio's cash-flow depletes.

The general word from within Krome suggests much of this is happening due to poor internal management and decision-making. From this news post over at tsumea, a Krome worker bee unleashed the following:
The moment you start having passion for your work, taking pride in what the company produces and truly caring about Krome and it's staff as an entity, that's when you've made your mistake because there will be nothing you can do to change anything.
And that's just a taste of the sort of thinking seemingly circulating the developer.

For those anxiously awaiting Blade Kitten, apparently that team is still intact and the game on track. Heard anything new? Drop us a line in the Comments section.

I don't understand what that means. Is this meant to be a negative post because the start sounds positive and then finishes bad. It's like there's a word missing in there.

I think he means, as a low-end code mokey, there's no point careing. Because if you do care and become passonate and take pride in your work. You cant do s*** to keep it on (your) vision and Managment will bend you over and f*** you up the arse anyway.

So you might as well not care, then you're not upset when the higher-ups decide to completly change/revamp/throw out everything you have been working on.

Like any gaming company working for EA or ActiVision. You can make the best game in the world, but you cant become emotionally invested in it, because you know that in the end, it's going to get ass-f***ed anyway.

Yep, pretty much a "don't care, all good" situation.

Yeah over 50 people were just let go, but I don't get the rest of this article...

The comment quoted in this post is from a month ago, and made by a guy who was made redundant in a previous "cull". He's obviously got some kind of grudge at the culture in his office - but you've got to remember that Krome is 3 studios, with different cultures in each of them.

The rumour about TFU is pretty weird too, seeing Lucas Arts hasn't even officially announced which platforms it'll be on. Plus as far as I know, Krome hasn't cancelled any projects in the lead-up to *this* round of redundancies...

Here's my take, people who start game companies are a little bit over-excited and often get a bit too confident about their business skills. They extend themselves too far and spend a little too much in an effort to "pwn everyone", and just like a trigger happy hero in a team game they fail to be cautious and get their team killed.

Funny enough, coming home from tafe, I was talking to a friend about the chrome guys being fired, and a lady over heard and said she worked for chrome, and that they were made redundent. This may be because of the loss for The Force Unleashed 2 IP.

Ugh, this is really frustrating, because I don't know what I'm allowed to comment on and what I'm not.

What I can say, is that there are a lot of disillusioned staff after further developments today. No idea what the future holds.

Good Riddance. They were a terrible studio.

Terrible artists, terrible art, terrible programmers, terrible programming.

That, and most of their artists are probably graduated TAFE students who turbosmooth everything.

A s*** sandwich with cured puppy meat.

I must admit that I also don't get the passion thing. all the big boys demand that you be very passionate about gaming in there recruiting sites. I couldn't understand working on Diablo 3 for example and not being 110% percent invested in the outcome.

And my Degree steps back again, it really seems like u gotta be a niche studio to make good, companies like Half Brick are pwning because they know their limits. Well looks like i still won't be getting a job in the industry anytime soon :|

My suggestion is outsource your skills to overseas, personally I'm aiming for a small indie studio working with UDK, much easier to break into and more freedom with my work.
