The Left 4 Dead demo is now open to the public, after a brief period of only being available for those that pre-ordered. Fire up Steam and hope you get a decent content server to play it! For those who came in late:
Set in the immediate aftermath of the zombie apocalypse, L4D's survival co-op mode lets you blast a path through the infected in four unique “movies,” guiding your survivors across the rooftops of an abandoned metropolis, through rural ghost towns and pitch-black forests in your quest to escape a devastated Ground Zero crawling with infected enemies. Each "movie" is comprised of five large maps, and can be played by one to four human players, with an emphasis on team-based strategy and objectives.
Our game page has more info, screenshots and video. Thanks rrrocket for the notice.

Just finished my first playthrough with 2 other random aussies, now that I know that my PC can run it, i'm about to order it over Steam.

(It said the minimum requirement for the processors was 3, i'm running it on 2.4 fine.

Thats because you get the actual demo via steam itself

I'm guessing this isn't hosted on the GA content server becuase it wont download with steamwatch running.

2.2 gig for a demo and no control over where to get it. I'm starting to really hate steam.
reload!

it's more of a teaser than a demo but not surprising it's open to the general public now as per what i think toll said in the other thread ~

i'll certainly layout some cash to buy it just to play a coop game for the first time in years but i reckon it's overhyped for that reason alone. It certainly speaks wonders of the shortcoming of the market I feel ~ Amazing with that many minds in the world that it took so long to bring it to reality

Co-op is such a simple thing yet game devs seem to steer away from it or do not recognise its popularity. Can't even remember the last co-op game I played.

The flood gates will open after the left 4 dead release.

There was me thinking any team based multiplayer game requires some cooperation to play....
The whole problem with CPU controlled enemies is that they never match up to having real opponents to play against, valve said the specs were higher for L4D than tf2 because of the zombie "AI", imagine what would be needed to run the "AI" of something with a little more intelligence......
You'd be hard pressed to name three games where CPU controlled characters were actually intelligent, dynamic and a challenge to play against. (Far cry 2 being an example of really bad AI - how did that game get a good review?!?!?)

This is fixed by the "versus" mode IMO (which I haven't played, but sounds awesome). 4 players randomly take control of the spawned "boss infected" and try there hardest to stop 4 players coop.

I can just tell I'm going to love spawning as a Smoker and snatching the top human player JUST as the horde strikes ;)

just been playing it, I seem to have the same random game crash that i get with all source engine games, sound gets stuck in infinite loop, sometimes game comes back , others doesn't and get a display driver error (not sure if its a gfx card issue or a vista issue), anybody else have/had this problem and know of a remedy?

its an awesome game, played the demo levels over and over and it never gets stale - forced coop (don't rambo or you will be eaten) and wave after wave of zombie hordes.

If the demo has so much replay value then im gonna go through the whole campaign again and again (plus no doubt new levels will be released).

Will be awesome when the boss infected are human controlled, will make for some real terror.
