EA and Crytek have today announced that a new multiplayer DLC pack will be making its way to the futuristic Crysis 3 shooter, offering four additional themed maps. Players who gather up the strength to try out the new DLC will be shipped off to the West Pacific to find four new maps, two additional multiplayer modes - Frenzy and Possession - and deadly new weapons.
“The gameplay in the Crysis series has always been deeply connected to the unique environments in which the action takes place,” stated Cevat Yerli, CEO of Crytek. “By transporting players out of the Liberty Dome and into the Lost Island setting, we’re not only returning to Crysis’ spiritual roots, but also introducing fresh ways to play that provide Crysis 3 fans with genuinely game-changing new tactical options, game modes and weapons.”

Not that the title to this post should be construed as a bad thing, rather that you should take it as an indication that once you "Suit Up", as EA is telling us to, you're going to be strapped in for one heck of a rollercoaster ride.

But as PC lovechild and FPS hero, Bennett "GunSlingerAUS" Ring learns through his Crysis 3 review duties, there's only so many explosions a man can take. Even one suited up in a piece of nano amazement. Crysis 3 does a lot right, including catering the game more towards the PC strengths of Crytek and their roots, but it forgets to take a breath every once in a while.

EA has unveiled details regarding the open beta phase for upcoming sci-fi FPS Crysis 3, with a date set for January 29th. Players wanting to jump in on the action will be able to compete in two beta multiplayer modes; Hunter and Crash Site. The open beta will also feature two maps, the dark Museum map and the open field Airport map.
Hunter Mode: This multiplayer game mode is all about the survival of the fittest. There are two teams, initially comprised of two permanently cloaked “Hunters”, and up to fourteen CELL troopers awaiting extraction. Each trooper slain respawns on the Hunter team to prey on their former allies, building to a frenetic climax. If any of the troopers survive the round, the hunters lose. Whichever way you play, Hunter Mode delivers a heart-pounding test of strategy and survival.

Crash Site Mode: This multiplayer game mode is the ultimate King of the Hill type experience. An Alien dropship deploys a pod at random around the map. Players on each team must remain near the dropped pod in order to capture the zone and accumulate points. Each alien pod holds two shields players can utilize defensively as weapons. In addition, each Crash Site map will have a “Pinger”, a CEPH-constructed walking weapon of mass destruction. But be careful, other players can hijack the Pinger while you’re inside of it!
The open beta will allow players to level up to rank 10 before capping out, and will offer various customisations for your Nanosuit including weapons, attachments and suit modules. The open beta will begin January 29th, and will be available for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

EA has also revealed a new gameplay trailer titled 'The Nanosuit', detailing just what exactly players can do with their exo-skeleton suit. Check it out below.

AusGamers was recently given a chance to catch up with Crytek's Mike Read to get a read on where the studio is at with their final chapter in the Crysis trilogy, Crysis 3.

Among a range of topics, we spoke with him about being on the home stretch, what the team has learnt from Far Cry through to Crysis 3, dedicated servers (and their importance in the world of PC gaming), and if the team could ever foresee a future where another studio takes on the Crysis universe.

"I don’t think so. Crysis is something that has really helped build Crytek to what it is today," Read explained.

"From the CryEngine 2 with the original Crysis, to what we’ve done with the CryEngine 3, and the number of licensees, and how we’re continuing to grow out that, in terms of film, and games, and architecture, and all of these different facets. We’re moving in quite a number of different directions."

EA and Crytek have revealed and teased a series of cinematic shorts to promote the upcoming Crysis 3 videogame. Titled The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3, the series is being directed by acclaimed filmmaker Albert Hughes (From hell, Book of Eli), who will seemingly be working with the game, machinima-style, to showcase the game's impressive environments.
“When EA and Crytek approached me about being involved in creating ‘The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3’ video series, I liked the idea of creating emotional stories using only computer generated images,” stated Albert Hughes. “The challenge of producing something intensely human without ever seeing a human on screen was incredibly compelling, and the technology of the CryENGINE that Crytek developed enabled me to do that and venture into a completely unique medium of storytelling.”

At 20 years old, filmmaker Albert Hughes shot to stardom when he and his twin brother, Allen, wrote and directed the seminal film, Menace II Society. Albert then went on to co-direct such critically-acclaimed films including Dead Presidents, From Hell and Book of Eli. For “The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3” video series, Albert was intimately involved with the development team at Crytek, writing the scripts, storyboards and shot plan for each video that was created entirely using in-game assets powered by Crytek’s revolutionary CryENGINE 3 technology.

“The goal with ‘The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3’ video series is to reveal the incredible world we have been building for Crysis 3 and to let CryENGINE take center stage to highlight the power of our state-of-the-art game engine,” said Cevat Yerli, Chief Executive Officer of Crytek. “We’ve worked closely with Albert on this project and think that the 7 Wonders series will show the leaps and bounds that Crysis 3 is making over its predecessors.”
The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3 series is set to kick off on December 12 2012, with the game itself due on February 22 2013 on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

For those of you who were never able to play the original graphics card melting title Crysis, EA and Crytek have announced that anyone who pre-orders the upcoming Crysis 3 will receive a digital copy of Crysis for their chosen platform.
Crysis thrusts players into the middle of a global conflict between the U.S. and North Korea over a mysterious artifact that turns out to be extraterrestrial in nature. In Crysis, players are outfitted with the series signature Nanosuit and an arsenal of fully customisable weapons that provide a wide array of options not only for the games story missions but also every single objective and individual encounter.

“The release of Crysis in 2007 was truly a watershed moment for first-person shooters and raised the bar on cutting-edge visuals and gameplay and we could not be more thrilled to include the original game as a pre-order bonus,” said Cevat Yerli, Chief Executive Officer of Crytek. “Building upon the framework laid by the previous games, Crysis 3 will deliver an action-packed experience that encourages players to assess, adapt and attack the Seven Wonders of the New York City Liberty Dome and challenges that stand in their way.”

We've been watching with some interest the progress of Crysis 3 - in particular the multiplayer aspect, as the developers have been talking a lot about how they're keen to make up for some of the online shortfalls of Crysis 2 and have addressed several of the key issues that affected the uptake of the game.

So we're especially excited to be able to offer some keys to the multiplayer alpha, giving PC gamers the first chance to get a taste of the latest instance in this series - known to push the boundaries of graphics on the PC.

There are local servers up and running for this - one of the few games that is making dedicated servers available at launch, because EA really see the benefits of this programme in titles like Battlefield 3 - so it is great news for Australians who can play with confidence knowing they're going to be able to get on local servers.

The alpha trial kicks off on the 2nd of November, but you can pre-load the client now from Origin with one of these these tasty keys that we have courtesy of EA and Crytek! As usual, our regular users will get first dibs, so head over to our key page and get in quick.

In an interview with AusGamers, Crytek boss and general tech-head, Cevat Yerli, promised that while the game will look good on the consoles, it will revive the old "can it run Crysis?" question for PC.

"Honestly, we will push the PC to its limit... to its boundaries," Cevat enthused. "The idea is that PCs will be next-gen gaming, consoles will be current-gen maximising it. We can’t deliver next-gen perse on current-gen; we already did that with Crysis 2, you know. So it’s going to be maximising the current generation on consoles, and giving you a glimpse of next-gen -- or what it means in a visual, and a simulation, and a richness of a world -- on a PC.

"We will definitely make sure that Crysis 3 will resurrect the question again “Can it run Crysis 3?” and we will melt PCs down," he said with a laugh.

The rest of our video interview (and transcript) talks about Crysis 3 level-design, dedicated servers for multiplayer and more.

We've seen a lot of impressive recent advancements in a variety of next generation videogame rendering engines, but graphics tech veterans Crytek want to remind us that despite their recent shift in focus from PC to consoles, they're still blazing trails in that area too. The Germany-based company has released their latest CryEngine tech demo video, and as always, it's a gratuitous piece of GPU porn.

The video shows off an array of the new effects that the developer has packed into CryEngine 3, all boasted as having been captured in real-time from the upcoming Crysis 3. For the technically minded, here's what's on offer: Real-time volumetric cloud shadows, pixel accurate displacement mapping, tessellated vegetation, composite 3D lense flares, procedural HDR flares and shapes, 3rd generation real-time global illumination, dynamic water volume caustics, real-time volumetric fog shadows, real-time area lights, unlimited particle FX lighting, integrated cloth & vegetation simulation, top secret tessellated toad tech.

That last point of note perhaps being the most impressive. If you're a fan of high-poly amphibians, hit up the trailer embedded below, or click here for the full 720p spread in our HD vldeo library.

A set of four new screenshots, captured from the game's E3 "Canyon" demo have found their way online, courtesy of a Crytek senior lighting artist Pierre-Yves Donzallaz, who reportedly posted them on his personal blog portfolio, and has since removed them.

Although the quality of the images suggests a bit of Photoshop editing work, The Verge reports that the images are supposedly captures from the game running in real-time, showing off the game's impressive lighting and post-processing effects. Hit the thumbs below for a closer look.

EA and Crytek have released a new batch of in-engine screen caps and concept art from the upcoming and very lush looking Crysis 3. You wouldn't know the game is supposed to be a first person shooter by looking at them though as all the images are once again gratuitously crafted scenes of urban-jungle action and dramatic pose-striking.
Crysis 3 is powered by Crytek’s proprietary CryENGINE and advances the state of the art with unparalleled visuals and incomparable shooter sandbox gameplay. Taking place in 2047, Prophet returns to New York City on a revenge mission only to discover that the city has been encased in a nanodome (Liberty Dome) and has become overgrown with trees, dense swamplands and raging rivers – a veritable urban rainforest. Seven distinct natural environments become known as the Liberty Dome’s Seven Wonders, where nobody is safe.
