EA has today revealed their latest financial report showing Star Wars: The Old Republic has dropped from last year's reports of 1.7 million active subscriptions to 1.3 million, a loss of 400,000 members.

EA has officially stated that the decrease in numbers is due to a cycling of "casual and trial players", or better known as the "Honeymoon" period of new MMOs. While not all bad news, the financial report did also bring a small hint at the next patch, titled "Allies". There is no word yet as to what will be in the patch, but likely something that can entice those numbers to come back.

In other EA news, the Q4 report revealed a staggering 6.8 million players still engaged in Battlefield 3's explosive warfare, with new content becoming available this May and June. EA's Play4Free brands are also generating roughly US$2 million each week, a staggering amount that just goes to show how profitable free-to-play brands are.

The full Q4FY12 report is available here.

I'm sure they probably hoped for more, but 1.3 million is still decent for a fledgling MMO, I don't think theres been too many in past years that were still hanging onto that many subscribers 6 months after release. Hopefully this "Allies" patch includes the dungeon finder they've been talking about, cos I'm really missing that functionality :(

Stuff that. I can't even access my SW account it as somehow the password got changed after I cancelled my sub (even though it's linked to my Origin account and I'm on that perfectly fine, and never changed any passwords).
Tried to retrieve it the password/reset it and they refused.

On the other hand, my WoW account was cancelled sub before all the b.net linking and was stolen/linked to an 'exploit' account.

Blizzard quite easily retrieved my account after identifying names from Credit Cards matched my b.net account and not the other random thing (plus I knew the characters/account name/what the password still was).

Mephz... I called them when I had an account issue. It was a call to the US, but didnt cost me anything on my mobile cap, and the woman fixed my issue straight away.

Pay to play ruins gaming. I don't mind people buying pets and other cosmetic items but when you gain an advantage from paying a little extra and then those people take advantage of that and all guild together. uhhh..

Yeah, I've got a few friends still playing although they are mostly late starters, they've held on to their player base fairly well really.

I never ended up even giving this game a try, while their numbers are quite positive the massive decline isn't exactly making me wanna go buy it right now.

Same. The reddit commentary on this really didn't inspire me either, sounds as bad as I initially feared.

Bulls***, you had no idea what you initially felt, you were changing your mind on the game every second day.

Each to their own but I'm still enjoying it, its kept me from going back to WoW for the past 6 months or so and thats more than any other MMO has managed to do.

When you consider games like Warhammer Online or AoC were down to a few hundred thousand people a couple of months after release, holding onto 1.3 million players 6 months after release is not a bad effort at all.

Just wait for the inevitable migration to free-to-play I guess.

Hahaha true, but, there was mostly negativity.

It's me. There was mostly negativity.

Yep.

I thought it was fantastic, well worth the purchase and 2 months of subscription to get through the storyline. For me I stopped playing because there wasn't much at level 60, and most of the quests that I had left were too hard to find people to do it with. If they fix both of these I'll probably go back and play through again in a few months - I think thats where SWTOR will be - people playing through the story, quitting and coming back in 6 months on/off.
