Given the void of announcements recently, those following Torchlight 2 closely were likely already expecting this news, but Runic Games have now officially confirmed that the game won't be seeing a 2011 release after all.
In a
blog post on the game's official site, Runic's Travis Baldree explains why they need a little more time and also seems to acknowledge that it might not be the best idea to drop their budget-priced indie title at a time when we're all preoccupied with a huge stable of triple-A games.
The first Torchlight was released in record time, but it had plenty of issues that a little more development could have resolved. We didn't have the resources at the time to give Torchlight that treatment. Right at this moment though, we do have those resources for the sequel, and we feel strongly that we should apply them to make this the best game we can make and hopefully one that you'll enjoy and continue to want to play in the future. We've probably had 18 months of full development time on it so far - not excessively long yet, as far as that goes. The amount of time we need to take it the rest of the way is relatively small.
We feel pretty safe in saying that if you enjoyed Torchlight at all, this sequel is superior in every respect. Right now our job is to ensure that the quality level is consistent all the way to the end.
Besides, you're all playing Skyrim right now anyway, aren't you? Or Battlefield 3? Or Uncharted 3? Or Saints Row 3? Or Arkham City? Or Skyward Sword? Or Minecraft? Or Modern Warfare 3? Or Dark Souls? Or Assassin's Creed Revelations?
No new release window has been given, so it's going to be interesting to see if the Torchlight 2 team -- which sports several ex-Blizzard North veterens -- can still beat the very similar and hugely anticipated Diablo 3 to market.

I dunno, maybe that answer is yes, the cheesy and cheap torchlight might appeal to enough of a market by default to get a RoI but it will never compare to the huge heavyweight that is blizzard no matter when it's released.
I swear, if i made underwear with a blizzard logo, told people about them, made them a buggy (maybe a couple of holes) sent them out for public beta, and then patched them before delaying official launch, i'd make a killing in the market. Also I pretty much own every blizzard game except WC1, and wc1 isn't from lack of trying, it's just scarce.

Huh? That's like saying I'm never going to eat chips again because I like steak too much.

I played that game through three times. I honestly didnt see a single issue.
The second and third times I played it through was with about 3-4 mods installed which all ran perfectly (such as a mod that lets you guy a scroll to reset and replace your talent points).
I think this guy is too hard on himself. For a indy title it felt A.

but it wasn't great or really even better than diablo 2
really finding it hard to believe that this could be better than diablo 3
but we'll see

It's going to be under half the price of D3 though - so you should be thinking about that too when you compare them.

i'm talking to everyone else that's is hoping/suspecting it's going to be better
D3 is going to be king, if not just because of the lore behind it
the story behind torchlight was pretty lamo and basically nonexistent throughout the game

uhhh dude no one has said that? why are you making a counter-argument to something no one has said?
it's made by a team the size of which you can count on your hands. why the f*** would you even think it has the ability to 'be better then' a game made by a company with BILLIONS of dollars incoming per year and tens of thousands of staff?
EDIT:
LOL story? It's a f*****g hack and slash built in 11 months. By name/definition it doesn't even need much story however it did have a basic story which I enjoyed, which is all it needed.
