In a forthcoming interview with AusGamers, EA DICE's Karl-Magnus Troedsson talked openly about the lack of out-of-the-box mod-tool support for Battlefield 3 and touched on that precious argument of 30 frames-per-second versus 60 frames-per-second.

"I will say that there’s been a lot of cool things coming out of the mod community for many years; I have a lot of respect for the people in the mod community," he told us when asked about the decision behind no mod-tool support. "At the same time, as developers of a game of this magnitude -- I mean, it’s the biggest thing we’ve ever done -- we have to select what it is we’re going to spend our focus on. We cannot do everything; it’s basically like that."

However, it's not all bleak with Karl assuring their mod community fans that they're being heard, and most certainly not ignored.

"We have heard the community very loud and clear on this topic -- that they want mod tools," he said. "We are considering it, back in the studio. The game won’t ship with mod tools, but we have heard it. I’m not saying that we’re going to do it, I’m saying that we are thinking about it."

And on that see-saw topic of which frame-rate is the better one to play your game on (in the console space), Karl quickly asserts the team don't want to get into too much of a slinging match, reminding us they've released every Battlefield game on consoles so far, at 30 frames-per-second.

"We have been working on this game for three years. We’re very conscious about quality and we’re polishing it to the last bits. Secondly, our games have been running at 30 FPS since we started doing console games," he told us. "There’s nothing “bad” about this. This is a unique selling point for some of the other competitors out there that are running at 60. I believe that they want to create an experience that are more twitchy, and it’s faster and these kind of things.

"I believe this matter is completely blown out of proportion," he adds. "If you look at the frame-rate, a lot of games do run at 30 FPS and [for] shooters from console, it works very well. The tempo of Battlefield 3 is slightly lower so it works really well for us. It also comes with the fact that our games have large open environments; we have tonnes of vehicles; we have more players; we have all-out destruction in the environment.

"60 FPS is not a technical problem, it’s very easy to do," he concludes on the topic. "If you turn off all the things I just mentioned, we can also get it to run at 60."

We'll have the full video interview feature up and running a bit later today, so be sure to stay tuned for more on Battlefield 3 from AusGamers and DICE's Karl-Magnus Troedsson.

Guess that's the best excuse we will get for mod support. Was it to hard to offer dedicated servers as well? Is EA's chain getting to tight?

What's the matter with 30FPS game engine ticks? Doesn't mean the graphics is capped at 30FPS on PC.... just turn off vsync

I played BC2 on my ps3 and imo you really noticed the 30fps, so much so that I wouldn't ever buy a bf game on console (regardless of the fact that I fail at controllers), however would happily buy the new CoD as I know it will run at 60fps.

30fps is s***, and I notice it more so in FPS' than anything else.

Oh 30fps on console... well duh the hardware is more limited then PC...

Who cares about fps on consoles though... easy fix, play on a PC where FPS is meant to be played

Laugh at the console newbs winging about 30fps ... wait for a new console or get a decent PC ... or ask DICE to turn of all the good bits... but no they want it all with no compromise but dont see their using outdated hardware.

Am interested where you see all the console newbs whinging about 30fps?

I play PC, but if I were to play on console I'd want 60fps, end. You mean to tell me you would prefer the 30 over 60 Kf?

This does nothing but hurt the modding community. Say you will or will not, no maybe.

A maybe answer doesn't encourage the community to make their own tools, it hinders it, as people are reluctant to work on a 3rd party mod tool if Dice turn around and release one just as yours is getting up to scratch and makes all your work pointless.

At least with a firm No, people will take it into their own hands to create these tools as soon as possible as has been done countless times for countless games in the past (sometimes it works out well, other times it doesn't).

So say yes or no please.

Curious as to find the "newbs". I see the whine, but not the newbs.

Better that they're considering mod tools than them being totally off the table. I remember another interview where they simply said it was all going to be too hard for modders to do stuff with because of the inherent complexity of BF3 and the sheer amount of work that goes into creating levels and other assets.

I can understand that, but I think they're massively underestimating the will and talent of the modding communities.

Maybe not lots of whinge or whine, but definitely a lot of hype from console gamers/game makers and their need for 60fps. Maybe it's because they know that graphical detail on the scale of PC is way out of their league, hence the only totem left for them to hold high is the "this game plays at 60fps"...gives them a feeling that they are playing on "next gen" technology.

As if you can feel 30fps on your PS3 so bad that you would never buy a BF game again! It's at 30fps because you had some of the improved features from DICE's engine: the lighting, the textures, the dust particles. Of course it's limited compared to the full-blown version of PC, but nevertheless you had some of its glory; it sounds like you want you 60fps and the best graphics but don't understand how that is actually achievable on a limited-tech platform such as the console.
It's not simply a "enter this line of code for 60fps". COD plays at 60fps because it looks like it did in COD4, not much has changed. And further, remember you're talking 60fps at 720p MAX on consoles...very few games make use of the HD or FullHD "capabilities". Hardly anything to love.

Quantity over quality? Keeping in mind that 30fps quality is roughly as good as a movie and you don't hear many ppl walk out of the cinema saying "man that movie was stuttering and jittering like it was only 30fps".

Yes u know you might be able to see the diff of 30FPS and 60FPS but apparently humans cannot see the difference of 30 and 60 FPS and BTW played BF3 not really noticeable (WELL FOR ME ! NOT FOR YOU FOR ME!)

There were soooo many custom cs maps made in that old hl map maker, i think everyone that played back in the day had atleast 1 go of making a map.

There were some that had collaborative efforts of many fans, that would have taken them a long time to make.

Companies really need to think about the modding community and the longevity of their games.

What are you silly console players on about? Dice have always been making PC focused games, it's who they are. Who cares about 30 FPS your lucky they are making a copy for the consoles.

Why can't they do quality settings on a console, like we have on PC? Even if it was only 2 modes high @ 30fps and low @ 60fps. Then customers who prefer bland graphics at high frame rates would also be happy and the competitors would stfu as they wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

bring on the EA Battlefield killer.

This retarded argument has been used for over a decade now.

You give me a game running at 100hz, 100fps, and right next to it a game running at 70hz 70fps and I will show you the difference.
