Creator of the hit zombie survival mod and soon-to-be standalone title, Dean "Rocket" Hall, has revealed through a Ask Me Anything on the DayZ Reddit that gamers can expect the standalone title as early as the end of this year.

While no release date has been set in stone, Rocket commented that we will see the game "before the end of the working year (2012)", however it will be in the form of a alpha version of the standalone. The title is set to take the development path that Minecraft used, where a playable alpha will be purchasable for a heavily discounted price.
Alpha will be heavily discounted paid project. The project will never be a full retail priced title, and the alpha will be heavily discounted. No prepurchase. But there will be a premium type purchase that contains some extra collectors edition type stuff like concept art prints etc... for those who want to throw money at the project.
The developer also answered questions regarding what to expect in the standalone title, including quivers, trainable dogs that sense danger, more enter-able buildings, zombie life cycles that dictate speed/hunger for flesh and also hand-to-hand combat. The standalone title has also been confirmed to be using its own version of the Real Virtuality engine, one that is currently being used for ArmA 3.

For those eager to try out the current mod, you can grab the latest version for ArmA 2: Combined Operations from AusGamers, including a how-to guide on installing.

Not sure it has the legs Minecraft does though, people could end up sick of it before the full thing even comes out.

Wonder why they didn't go the Kickstarter route.

Probably because it doesn't need Kickstarter I'm thinkin Khel, it Looks like BIS is well and behind it; and with that in mind, I'm not sure what to make of it.

I dare say it'll have most (if not all) the problems that the mod has now. The real 'room for improvement' that I see in 'going solo' as it were is to allow better back-end coding between each hosted server and the player database(s).

People are finally paying attention to ArmA because it introduced zombies, hehehehe.

ArmA is pretty amazing, some youtube videos and mods are absolutely incredible and I don't just mean DayZ.

Never enjoyed Operation Flashpoint 1 originally. That experience turned me off similar games. DayZ encouraged me to pick up Arma2 and I've ended up barely touching DayZ and playing (and enjoying!) the Arma2 campaign.

I've always enjoyed the franchise (Op:Flash, ARMA, ARMA 2, VBS, VBS2) for what it is. A simulator.

It still has one massive hurdle in leaping from a 'sim' to a 'game' for mine, input. The mouse controls and in-system UI are it's biggest flaw.

The engine is capable of some AWESOME visuals, and when it comes to day/night effects (certainly in ARMA 2) the game is second to none

Hope there's a discount for owners of Arma - I just bought the whole deal to play the Dayz mod and now I guess all mod support is going to be focused on the full release...

Nah, and I haven't played minecraft either, I was just making an observation. It just seems like it would have smaller appeal than something like Minecraft, and not have that same level of replayability, cos I'd imagine theres always something new you can go and build in Minecraft, but there'll be a point in DayZ where people just get sick of running around surviving the zombie apocalypse.

I dunno, maybe I'm way wrong, and more power to them if they pull it off, but it just seems like a potentially unwise way to go about making the game? Not only are you standing the risk of burning out your most devoted players, but you stand the risk of turning off new players who try it and don't realise what an alpha is and just think its s***.

I hope I get a discount on Borderlands 2 cuz I bought Torchlight 2. Derp.

You are not entitled to anything, also they will continue to develop the mod along side the standalone, presumably until the standalone alpha comes out.

Yea you can get to that point but its the tension that brings you back. I'd bet that if it has this kind of pull in a very unfinished state then it should be ok once they add all the intended content, assuming that does not take an eternity. Also wouldn't alpha/beta testers always be the ones most likely to burn out earlier?

Ha, it's not a case of defending Arma, though I happily admit my Arma bias.

When you buy a game specifically for a free mod for that game, you can't turn around and say you bought the mod.

I believe the development method they are putting DayZ standalone through will actually work well with how the title works. Currently in the mod I've played nearly 146 hours, which is way more then Skyrim which is sitting at 102 hours. It is quite amazing what I can do in just a buggy, hack ridden mod compared to a fully fledged game. Even with partial systems in place, I can jump on and make a toll road, go hunting for an hour in the woods, create campfires that litter towns, make treasure maps for players etc.

I think the greatest thing about DayZ is that it offers a true sandbox, and also gives that huge amount of tension/adrenaline. Now with the bandit/hero skin its a lot less shoot on sight, and people seem to be more open minded when pulling the trigger. Obviously all this is just my experience, and it isn't for everyone as it clearly isn't for you, but it is pretty crazy what just a mod can do.
