Good talk and makes sense that constant/easy access to porn would cause the brain to adjust in how it processes pleasure and stimulation. Bonus spoot: http://mylifelivedwithfat.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/annoyed-woman-wagging-finger-778959.jpg You just couldn't help yourself could you???? For shame!! |
Presuming that humans evolved in a fully clothed society, of course...
This point really sums it up for me: (or in pictorial form) The vague symptoms he gave out are symptoms typical of alternative medicine omni diseases. They are otherwise known as "The symptoms of life." I bet they never had books either, but there's no anti-book foundation speakers giving speeches on how our genetic makeup isn't accustomed to handling that amount of awesome fiction... Wonder why. ;) |
These TED talks are great, I need you to post more!

I'm unconvinced, going to do my own research.
Edit: Seems I'm not as qualified as I thought, can someone give me a hand? last edited by Zakson at 13:32:09 12/Jun/12 |
Turned off after 60 seconds, not enough boobs.

F*** it, porn folder gone.
Lately I've been having massive anxiety around girls whenever it gets to even a marginally sexual stage. As in, even a girl sitting with me, like, cuddled up on the couch watching T.V. My heart starts beating spastically, I find it hard to breathe and I can't think straight. Now there's a few guys on here that know me irl and they know that me saying this is pretty f***ed up. I've never really been one to get anxiety or even feel it around women, I have no problem talking to random chicks or even getting numbers etc... but ever since I broke up with my long term missus, obviously my porn habits have increased and this anxiety has hit me out of no-where. Maybe there's a correlation? Have no idea but maybe it's time for me to get rid of this s***. tl,dr: I'm becoming less of a wanker. |
I'd do the chick in Mantis' post.
e: My heart starts beating spastically, I find it hard to breathe and I can't think straight.Isn't that what usually happens when you detect a viable female? All thinking goes out the door and the only thoughts are "must reproduce". We'd like to think we're more evolved than cavemen but we aren't. |
you need some redcliffe sluts to bring you down a notch ^
|
Watched whole thing and im not convinced. If you watch some wierd porn heaps i can see your brain requiring the same stuff to turn you on IRL but considering they talked about other addictions like food/drugs that people consume often, i dont see any issue with watching porn a few times a week when there are plenty of people that reward themselves with food/drugs on a daily basis. Also, i assume most cases of porn addiction was single guys. How does being in a relationship change things?
|
+1, giving it a go to see if what he's saying is true.
discussion here http://www.reddit.com/r/NoFap/ |
Not convinced in the slightest.
I do think that porn is like anything else though - gaming, fitness, eating - moderation just seems like a good way to go. |
If you watch some wierd porn heaps i can see your brain requiring the same stuff to turn you on IRL My understanding is that the specific urge for weird stuff precedes the seeking of said weird stuff. I've never heard of anybody where their fetishes (the opposite sex, the same sex, shoes, etc) haven't been a lifelong ordeal. Tbh I'm surprised at the lack of skeptical aversion to alternative-medicine level claims here, I'd at least wait for professionals giving this advice before taking it as in any way a likely pragmatic course of action. Particularly because he is the face of an anti-porn organisation... None of it holds up to me, we didn't have books/tv/music/encyclopaedias/safety/cars/etc back then either, and people would have been naked and athletic all the time. My understanding is that apes masturbate and f*** constantly, if anything we're less in our normal sexual setting right now. |
F*** it, porn folder gone. Pretty rash decision. You'll regret losing your old favourites. |
I do think that porn is like anything else though - gaming, fitness, eating - moderation just seems like a good way to go. Thats what i thought but i wonder what a moderate doses of porn is. I checked out the reddit thread and the study of members and from memory the most common user was male, single, a virgin, who watches porn daily for an hour and has something like anxiety/depression/ED/PE prior to starting nofap. |
I don't like anyone who says, "Porn changes attitudes towards women" and frames it in a negative light.
Modern society has never been as progressive on feminism as it is today. Of course there is still work to be done, but it just seems counter-intuitive to use that as an argument when discussing internet era (1980's onwards) access to porn and trying to make conclusions on that. I generally agree with Nina Hartley when it comes to porn. I think she has it pretty much nailed. Pun...intended! http://thehumanist.org/september-october-2010/atheism-ethics-and-pornography-an-interview-with-nina-hartley/ |
It's all about variety. Sometimes I feel like normal, sometimes I feel like spicey.
|
I don't like anyone who says, "Porn changes attitudes towards women" and frames it in a negative light. Do you disagree though? http://jhexaduna.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/1276103228200820.jpeg |
That reddit thread is full of lols Nerfy, like this gem:
What did people do in regards to porn before the internet? While a minority of people were always perverts, what did the majority of men do otherwise? Was masturbation still done in the absence of porn, but with less frequency? The internet generation, uncertain on whether they can claim the credit for the amazing discovery of wacking off. |
http://www.reddit.com/r/NoFap/ Porn and masturbation are not mutually exclusive. I can not look at porn indefinitely, can only go a week or two without a good tug. It's like a valve that needs a good turn every once in a while. |
It's like a valve that needs a good turn every once in a while. lol. I am under the belief this is the case for most guys so it annoys me when girls think its weird guys masturbate, and get s***** that we do it to porn. If im gunna whack it, id prefer a nice vid with sound over a magazine or imagination any day. |
NoFap is like the weirdest ying/yang parody of FetLife. NoFap has girls saying "I'm so glad to find guys that don't fap, I hated that my bfs fapped", whereas FetLife has girls saying "I wish I could get my bf to fap in front of me, that's so hot"
|
porn just aids good old fantasy. i dont think anyone faps with the thought of sweaty, awkward sex with their partner.
so when women crackup about watching porn and fapping, i dont think they really get fapping to begin with. chicks that hate on porn dont masturbate. |
i re-entered the thread because i saw that fpot posted, thinking 'oh fpot would have posted a unique and well-thought out perspective on the topic like usual'.
i leave disappointed. |
I am now wracked with guilt for letting you down hardware. I will try much harder next time :(
|
He doesn't say porn makes your brain change. He says porn addiction then alludes to the possibility that it is similar to many other forms of addiction.
|
I'd be interested to see if the guys he quoted whom had massive life turnarounds had changed anything else at the same time such as a replacing fapping with exercise. The whole "i started a business and took up piano" etc. from one dude as an argument that the entire population of men have an issue is a bit far fetched for TED.
|
It's an independently arranged TED talk (Ted X), which usually means an entirely different tier of quality (though I think that they're still sorted for upload by the curator).
If there's one thing that is a huge threat to civilization, it's internet refresh addiction when work stuff takes 10 or 15 seconds to save, and you are a frantic ctrl+s masher. >_< |
I'm getting tired of having to defend every single human vice because the small number of addicts out there who can't handle there gambling, drugs, sex, smokes, drink, internet (which we all know is for porn). The f*** wit moral crusaders preach doom and destruction how if we don't ban x then our entire society will collapse and everyone we know will die. The irresponsible f***heads continue to ruin it for the rest of us who have our s*** together but very much like to enjoy our adult leisure pursuits whatever they may be. |
The internet generation, uncertain on whether they can claim the credit for the amazing discovery of whacking off. Ahah now there is a quote and a half! love it but yeah, monkeys do some sick s*** constantly when it comes to sex. humans have cummulative culture, that's the only difference. porn and drugs are bad mmmmmmkay. |
internet (which we all know is for porn). I started talking to a catholic who was accusing people of not sharing his/her definition of god-who-is-ok-with-evolution as being fundamentalists the other day, which I thought was entirely hypocritical, and unsubstantiable, it was the least productive moment of my internet life. Internet talking can be the far greater timesink sometimes... Like this, right now, come to think of it. :P |
i'm going to stop fapping and start playing piano. i should be master pianist in no time.
|
Ravan0s, you have to buy a piano first. That costs money, a fair bit too. Fapping is by far the more efficient past time.
|
You get bombarded with "No fap" 24/7 over at bodybuilding.com, they even included a picture of the forum on the TED slide.
Whether or not there has been a significant benefit for myself, I'm not quite sure... it's definitely different though. |
You poor bastard chub. How long's it been? I find i get all jittery if i go a few days without letting some go. And weights i think makes things worse as IIRC it helps produce testosterone that i assume can only increase sex drive. Oh, your IF knowledge might be needed in that gym/fitness junkies thread.

And weights i think makes things worse as IIRC it helps produce testosterone that i assume can only increase sex drive. Oh, your IF knowledge might be needed in that gym/fitness junkies thread. At least 6 months now, I stopped counting after 90 days, which was the "reboot" that everyone was doing at the time. I haven't had a regular GF for years, so after the first week I immediately started hunting the females like never before and everything developed from there. If the end goal is to have more success with females and more sex, it definitely did its job. It's been a bit uncomfortable at times though because it has changed who I am in many aspects and problems have arisen in my life that wouldn't have been there otherwise. This forum seems like a strange place to discuss it though, talking about masturbation with a bunch of male gamers, gross. |
I'm confused, what exactly did you do Chub and how has it made your life better?
Interesting topic overall, not sure I agree as pointed out in other comments, seems a bit anti-porn biased. If we go by Game Of Thrones history, then peeps were even more sexually explicit back in ye olden time! |
I'm confused, what exactly did you do Chub and how has it made your life better?Came across a "no fap" thread on bodybuilding.com and they linked me to a site http://www.yourbrainonporn.com/. Stopped watching porn and stopped masturbating, 100%. The most noticeable outcome was after about 1-1.5 weeks that I was more sociable with females than I had ever been in my life. I began taking immediate action and every opportunity that presented itself to interact and have sex with said females. While that might not seem like much to some people, I have always been highly reclusive and relatively uninterested in pursuing anything socially, let alone with the opposite sex. About 5 weeks in I stopped drinking alcohol/using drugs completely, while I don't know if I can attribute that entirely to the no fap, it definitely played a big part. As time went on things just started to snowball and just about every aspect of my life has changed and here I am ~6 months later wondering how the f*** I arrived here. Then I pop onto QGL tonight and it seems like the movement has found its way here. last edited by CHUB at 21:11:57 12/Jun/12 |
Well I've decided to stop the practice and see what it's effects will be for me. Will be the second hardest thing to kick, because I started since I was 11. I've kicked a few other bad habits curious how this one will effect me, never gotten past 7 days.
|
CHUB: And what were the problems that arose?
Sip: It isn't a bad habit. Either get sex or relieve that pressure yourself! Has to be done, can cause damage if isn't. last edited by Zakson at 21:38:35 12/Jun/12 |
And what were the problems that arose?Nothing directly attributed to it besides the vast array of withdrawal symptoms during the first month or two. Life just became more complicated when I moved out of my comfort zone, I could have lived in that cocoon for the rest of my life no problem... it would have been easy and enjoyable. I'm still new to all of this and not sure where it's exactly going, only time will tell. |
Intriguing.
The most noticeable outcome was after about 1-1.5 weeks that I was more sociable with females than I had ever been in my life. I began taking immediate action and every opportunity that presented itself to interact and have sex with said females. Have you had corresponding improvements in the success of these female ventures? If so would you relate that to the no-fap, or just the fact that your trying every opportunity now (which is caused by the no-fap). |
Edit.
I just had a read of that Your Brain on Porn site, it seems specifically for internet porn addiction and bad physical symptoms as a result of that. I'm not sure it's something you should really consider if you're fine, everything in moderation hey. |
Pretty rash decision. You'll regret losing your old favourites. For me deleting my stash, I'm seeing if I can just give up the porn side of s***. No god damn way am I denying myself my given right to have a hand shandy. Also, the more I think about it, the more I think having 'favourite' porn movie etc... might be edging towards slight porn addiction. Maybe shows an emotional connection between yourself and the movie or the actresses presented, instead of porn being a means to an end? Dunno, not aimed at Thermite, but a general thought. |
The most noticeable outcome was after about 1-1.5 weeks that I was more sociable with females than I had ever been in my life. I began taking immediate action and every opportunity that presented itself to interact and have sex with said females. So giving up porn turned you into a horny douchebag that hits on women all the time? Got it. |
you getting big and lean chub?
im not sure i could give up batting. theres nothing i like better then sending petal and the kids off to work and getting on down to some lucy thai |
Uh oh - Shouldn't have shared your experience CHUB! Everyone on this forum is going to try it, thinking it's the holy grail of getting laid more! There are going to be a lot of frustrated I.T. departments and angry posts in this forum over the next 2 weeks lol.
|
well a few years back when i went travelling i didn't have access to any porn for 2 months. i don't think it affected me or changed me in any way.
|
Chub's adventures made me lol as im sure it could apply to many guys. Stop relying on porn and instead make extra effort to chase girls. To me though it seems a little too simple to warrant a complete fap ban.
|
When I go on long camping/touring trips I often go weeks without porn/fapping with no change in behaviour or outcomes.
Mostly because lack of opportunity though, not through choice. As long as it's not an actual addiction, I think it's healthy. Fun too. |
going to put it out there but the stop of drugs and alcohol is what probably helped your situation.
|
Better not get too far into this, not really the right forum for this type of discussion and I do know people here IRL so it's a bit weird.
going to put it out there but the stop of drugs and alcohol is what probably helped your situation. No doubt but that only occurred because of the changes that happened in the weeks leading up to it. |
i sort of understand chub, had friends with benefit happening last year and yeah use to go out all the time and chat to girls and stuff but didnt really mind if didnt pick up as i knew i would be getting some. I have bit of rule if i am going out on saturday night i wont look at porn after thursday. makes me more keen to chat and socialize more with random ppl.
|
surely its dangerous going out with a loaded gun though!?
|
Never shop while hungry. So true. You end up coming home with bags full of food you won't eat. O wait, you be talking about something else. Well I guess the answer can be viewed both ways lol. |
I've never understood girls that get jumpy over porn or masturbation.
I think some girls like to think they are the be all and end all of pleasure. They are wrong. If you are unable to satisfy your partner because you've been beating off to f***-tonnes of porn, then obviously that's going to create problems. If you have a higher libido than your partner and can fulfill your needs via porn then that seems like a decent solution to me. Does it need to be anymore complicated than that? As for all this "I can't talk to females because I've been watching too much porn" I can't understand that at all. Whatever works for you, do what you have to. One thing I don't think anyone can argue with is that porn has given most people an excellent sex education. I believe all the "can't find the clitoris" jokes just don't apply to our generation because of it. Although I did have a god-awful blowjob once where the girl used her teeth a lot more than she should have. She would have benefited from some extra porn-viewing sessions. |
this guy makes logical jumps the size of the grand canyon, half of his statements are just outright wrong.
L2 evolutionary biology+psychology. |
I call bulls*** on CHUB's no fapping = better success with females as he has been smashing D'Bay skanks for longer than it's been legal for him to.
