Hi guys, So i have $6400.00 to spend tomorrow/tuesday on a new computer just before christmas. I want it for a gaming computer, so far the system im looking at building is at $5400.00
The SSD is obviously for operating system and game installs, 2 of the nas drives are for raid mirror for storage and the left over hdd is for system snapshots and additional backup. --- Intel CORE i7 4930K/3.40GHz/12MB CACHE/LGA2011/6CORES/NO FAN --- Corsair Cooling Hydro Series H80i High-performance CPU Cooler, 2x 120mm Cooling Fans, Intel LGA 2011 --- Asus SABERTOOTH X79 MB,Socket 2011,X79,8DDR3,3PCIE 3.0,GbLAN,RAID --- Corsair 32GB (4x8GB) DDR3 CMY32GX3M4A1600C9R 1600MHz Dimm, Unbuffered, 9-9-9-24, Vengeance Pro Red H --- Western Digital RED WD20EFRX RED NAS- 2TB/INTELLIPOWER/DDR2/3.5 --- Western Digital RED WD20EFRX RED NAS- 2TB/INTELLIPOWER/DDR2/3.5 --- Western Digital RED WD20EFRX RED NAS- 2TB/INTELLIPOWER/DDR2/3.5 --- Intel 240GB SSD 530 Series OEM SATA III 6Gb/s, 20nm, MLC, read/write speed up to 55 --- Asus GTX TITAN PCI-E 3.0 6GB 384-bit DDR5, Base:837MHz, Boost:876MHz, DVI-I x 1, DVI-D x 1, DP --- Dell 30" U3014 UltraSharp IPS Monitor – 2560x1600, 6ms USB3.0 HDMI DisplayPo --- Corsair 900D Super Tower PC Case with Side Window --- Corsair AX-1200i 1200W i 80+ Platinum Certified ATX PSU --- ( i already have new mouse, dvdr/blue ray and mechanical keyboard etc ) Would really appreciate some feedback and possible improvements to the system before handing over the cash. I have a wholesale account so still have a bit of room. |
I'm sure it'll be great but $5400 for a PC seems excessive..
|
get a gtx780. you'll have 75% of the titan for a fair bit less cash.
you will jism everywhere with the dell 30. i did :) |
* Change H80i to H100i or even H110i.
* Take out 16GB of RAM. * Use this RAM: G.Skill Trident X F3-2400C10Q-16GTX 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 ^ Good chance you'll get 2133 or 2400Mhz out of it. * Consider changing Sabertooth mobo to Rampage 4 Formula. * Change Titan for 1x GTX780Ti (cheaper, faster) , or 2x GTX780 (faster again), or even 2x GTX780Ti (much speed, huge graphics, wow) * Get another 240GB SSD and RAID0 them. * Change expensive Dell screen for a 24/27" 120Hz panel (if gaming on it). Eg: Asus VQ278H(E) (~$600) (Yes, I've been there, I own a U2410 Wide Gamut, not worth it for gaming, get a TN.) * Change PSU to 900W. * Overclock the 4930K to about 4.2Ghz, (4.4Ghz on H110i) and the memory to 2133/2400Mhz. Can't really buy a faster system than this unless you throw in more graphics cards. /cents |
I'm sure it'll be great but $5400 for a PC seems excessive.. so is 32GB of RAM. |
same spec as i have minus the titan (gtx780) the dell 30 and all that hdd
the liquid cooler was neat to install, but i haven't changed the oc settings in the bios to get 4.2Ghz out of it yet it's a good build, enjoy if anything i'd plug another gtx780 in alongside it last edited by trillion at 19:24:13 22/Dec/13 |
$5400 on a PC? Spend $3400 and save $2000 for lady or 2.. The working kind of lady ;)
|
if you have the money i'd get an OCZ velo drive. It gets past the SATA3 bottleneck and exploits PCIe bandwidth... it will blast through that intel SSD more than twice over.
Or consider getting two and raid. |
Buy a mid-range PC that'll play all games just fine and save that money.
But if you really must: Dell 30" U3014 UltraSharp IPS Monitor – 2560x1600, 6ms USB3.0 HDMI DisplayPo You're going to buy a super gaming rig that'll get you a lot of FPS but you're going to watch it on a 60hz screen. That makes no sense. Dude, 120hz or don't even bother. Size isn't everything. 27" 120hz is what you want. |
that's a massive PC spend.
well done on saving so much for it but how are you going to get it built in time for Xmas? |
Didn't even know you could still spend that much on a PC ...
|
$5400 on a PC? Spend $3400 and save $2000 for lady or 2.. The working kind of lady ;) and a 8-ball of coke |
All of that to play minecraft... |
Lol it was a gift. I can't use the money for anything else.
I'll look over suggestions and come up with a build. Thanks all. I'll build it myself, been building pcs for over two decades.. I have a few wholesale accounts with main suppliers. Sourcing the CPU might be the hardest part locally |
That much money as a gift? Jesus. I would struggle to top $2,000 max while building a computer, especially to just play games.
|
Buy yourself a f*****g amazing PC for $3k and spend the rest on coke and hookers.
|
A gift? Ok now I'm suss on this whole thing.
Clearly stubert works for Intel, Corsair, Asus, Western Digital and Dell. Time for "This post has been removed. Reason: ask before advertiing". (lol at typo from actual removed topic) |
Didn't even know you could still spend that much on a PC ... You can spend way more. There are cases in the $1,000 to $3,000 mark alone. A massive dual Xeon setup can cost over $15,000. In fact the 3930K/4930K are a good bang for buck chip at that upper level. ($500-$600) The Xeon chips around them (performance wise) are well over $1,000 per chip and the multipliers aren't even unlocked which makes them tough to overclock. BF4 uses 12 cores on these CPUs which highlights how the industry is taking on multi-core gaming. The old "you don't need more than 2/4 cores" thing is getting pretty redundant now. Just comes down to how much overhead someone wants for the future. |
BF4 uses 12 cores on these CPUs which highlights how the industry is taking on multi-core gaming. Yeah, coz DICE are having such a good run with BF4 atm... it might use all cores, but it's still a steaming POS. I wish more games used two cores let alone 12 Back to OP... It's simple really. My one suggestion for building a gaming PC is to NOT SPEND $5k+ on a gaming PC. Great 'bang for buck' can be had for <$2k (computer alone) and if your heart is set on a Dell U30, for christ sake wait til Dell put on Boxing day sales, or mid year sales... the $500+ you'll save could be better used on anything else. So at a rough blast of ~$3500 take the other 2k odd and go on a trip somewhere. |
Red drives are designed for Network Attached Storage.
You could get a better result with 2 660's in SLI i am at a loss as to why you would need so many HD's and a solid state drive unless you plan to install a gazillion games and then back them all up,which is not necessary if they are steam games eg i just installed Half life 2 on W8.1 and Valve kindly loaded all my saves and achievements from XP. My XP build a mini ATX, 2 gig ram GTX 560ti, intel P4 800wt psu the point being you don't need something that could be used for folding home for playing games. (ps). You may as well get 3 monitors and play your games in 3d. |
It is probably Daddy buying one before they change the 100% depreciation law on Jan 1st

Ok so this is the build im thinking of picking up the parts for today. Once again thank you all for your input:

ONLY 24INCH monitor? someone that sees ur pc and sees a pathetic 24inch monitor won't be impressed lol i did think that, however i already have 2 x 24 inch monitors and this one is a 144hz |

Nordost LEIF Series Blue Heaven High Speed HDMI Cable |
Ok so just got it together and ran the latest 3dmark. No overclocking and nasty drivers. will do some tweaks and overclocking tomorrow and run again. here is the standard test results: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/2016033
all in all im pretty happy with the build, gaming has been great fun tonight turning everything up max. |
Who uses HDMI at all anyway? It's s***. DVI all the way baby.
|
well you certainly should not use HDMI for its audio capability
far better digital cables for that (assuming your music server and DAC has those digital terminations available to use but then there are adapters like USB to SPDIF etc) |
Get a modular psu @80+ gold, mine is a 800 wt Silent pro gold.
And don't listen to the naysayers about msy they don't make the stuff they sell and they have a high turnover so you will almost always get the latest gear. The problem is choosing the best solution for your self, personally i do research over a period of many months reading reviews and the wait is always worth it. PS modular psu = you only connect the device's you have installed which frees up space in your machine for better air flow and it doesn't look like a mad woman's breakfast of loose cables inside. |
well you certainly should not use HDMI for its audio capability I meant for PC monitors. |
What a waste of cash. Just spend $2K of a pretty sweet gaming PC and tell the gift giver they can keep the other $3000, merry Christmas.
|
I wanna do an upgrade because it's fun putting a new PC together although I only play WoW these days so it would be a waste.
|
^^ but think of how many hi-res pictures of mandy you could have on there!
|
well you certainly should not use HDMI for its audio capability - far better digital cables for that (assuming your music server and DAC has those digital terminations available to use but then there are adapters like USB to SPDIF etc) You need to understand that the best 5.1 audio that comes out of a computer is converting the uncompressed multi-channel PCM signal found directly on the PCIe bus. If you run PCM through optical cables, you are limited to 2 channels unless lossy-compression is used. PCM > All. I wanna do an upgrade because it's fun putting a new PC together although I only play WoW these days so it would be a waste. WoW on the system below still runs at 40fps in the Shrine. Boggy old game engine, runs nice in 10/25's though. ------------ I think 2 Titans was a waste. 2x 780Ti's would beat them by a decent margin, and you could have bought 3 for the price of 2 Titans, not that you'd want to try and run 3 cards on a 4770K. Clock up and show the scores. |
can anyone compare http://www.umart.com.au/pro/products_listnew.phtml |
I can't believe ph33x got sucked into the void that is RuleofBooKz audio cosmos if we can believe it, RuleofBooKz has a rape dungeon filled with wall to wall egg cartons and an audio system built by trained monkeys that is capable of sending him into a state of transcendental bliss, ergo he is now omnipotent.
