howdy all
Anyone doing QUT subjects (not necessarily IT) got any recommendations on electives OUTSIDE of IT? I'm third year and almost finished and.. well.. yeah.. uni starts tomorrow and i haven't picked my subjects yet :) I've already done: ITB106 Foundations of Computing ITB107 Programming Laboratory ITB225 Introduction to Databases ITB310 Organisational Information Systems ITB410 Software Development 1 ITB411 Software Development 2 ITB412 Technology of Information Systems ITB510 Data Communications KWB010 Communications for the IT Specialist ITB420 Computer Architecture ITB421 Software Development 3 ITB424 Software Engineering Principles ITB427 Concurrent & Distributed Systems ITB432 Advanced Programming Laboratory ITB433 Programming Languages ITB448 Object Technology ITB524 Internetworking i'm doing itb441 - itb457 and a network engineering elective this semester.. plus an elective that i choose.. i'm thinking business.. seeing as Z block is f*****g TANG CENTRAL.. :) |
EEP123 Process Control & Robotics 12cp
|
KMB619 Music & Sound Technology is a cool subject. You dont need a musical background or anything, you just need to know what sounds and looks good :). Deals with multimedia type stuff and all that. I did it last semester.
|
hmb315
you play games such as softball vollyball and touch for a few hours a week. You have to take a 15min lesson or something plus final test.. not a bad subject.. however not sure if pe/edu suits since your IT. Just thought I'd give you a different option. |
WOW.. amazing response guys... i was expecting the usual bs :) Bortman's suggestion sounds like the easiest f*****g subject alive.. but hmm.. i don't really like volleyball..
now.. OZTAG.. if they had that instead.. i'd f*****g play :) Gundam - whats that subject about? and also.. what is eep104 (real time operating systems) like? and eeb412 (microprocessor programming)? apparently it has eeb312 as a pre-req but i *could* get away with having not done 312.. also, what is eeb905? chod - who are you? do i know you from uni?.. I did my first year at carseldine before i grew a f*****g brain and went to gp.. so i probably don't know you hey :) holy s***.. music and sound technology.. sounds cool.. i used to play the clarinet, the oboe, piano and sax.. that sounds awesome.. holy s***.. now i have to make a decision.. :) thanks all.. any other suggestions are good.. of course i'm liable to explode at some point thanks to having to pick between 5.3 * 10^12 f*****g subjects :) |
My response was acctually intended as a joke. :)
EEB412 has a HC11 programming segement and a Segment on Op-Amps which might be hard if you haven't done any eltronics stuff though when I did it it wasn't to hard. They basically slapped two subjects together. I'm currently doing EEP104 so I can't really tell you about it. I missed todays lecture for a meeting, I'm glad I did casue reading the notes I already know about them and they look like they're straight from the text book. EEB905 Advanced Topics in Electrical Engineering B 12cp |
For Electives can you do any subject, from any faculty, or do you have to do ones within your faculty?
For example could you be doing IT and do a music subject and a teaching subject? |
With an Electrical Engineering Degree you have to ask you're Course Coodinator to do ones they haven't put in their list of preapproved electives.
|
Yeti Skinner - Yeah, you can do any degree level unit from any faculty (unless it's listed as a subject that can't be taken as an elective for your course).
|
Dafugg i dont think i know you. I did ITB432 last semester. Did you do it?
Whoever wanted text books.. which ones did you want? First year i went crazy buying them and then i got a clue and never bought a text book again. So if u need 1st yr IT Books i can prolly help. (Although they are pretty f*****g useless anyway IMHO) |
they teach u to play volleyball btw. if u dont know how to play.
its a pretty good subject |
bump
looking for an easy elective at QUT GP this semester, something like that hmb315 sounds good but is only available second semester and at kelvin grove |
LSB568 - Electron Microscopy
It requires no pre-reqs and is piss easy to pass. You get to play with a couple Electron Microscopes too |
That was wierd.. I come here to offer advice and instead find that I'm asking the questions.
Just for reference, I ended up doing a law elective that rocked hard.. can't remember the number but it was about torts. Pretty easy, very different to the IT subjects and interesting tutorials that I actually *went* to which makes it the only subject in my degree that I attended non-mandatory tutes for. |
i was looking something along the lines of not needing to go to many, if any at all, pracs or tutes. so an elective that i won't need to focus too much attention on at all throughout the semester
|
someone hook me up with some advice too!
Has to be an IT elective. No way am I doing project 2. Thinking maybe a basic linux server subject (Work want to run a linux server and I have s*** all idea about linux). Thinking also a nice programming subject. Did VB.net and that was good. I hate all the theory subject, any programming subject that is majority practical (ie do your pracs and you pass) i'd be stoked with. Maybe a database subject as well? Just finished all my accounting subjects - looking into getting into Computer systems audit one day. Any ideas im open to also. Ill be working 4 days a week this semester so I don't want something that is going to take a s*** load of time in reading text books and stuff. 2 hours prac, 2-3 hours in homework per week and im sweet (plus assignments) |
Anyone had any experience with ITB223? (Oracle?) It says it needs ITB229 for the prerequisite - and i f*****g hated that subject with a passion. Is 229 more prac based? Or is it similar to 229?
ITB267? Business Analytics? ITB730? Information Security Fundamentals? ITB322? Information Resources? |
itb322 info resources - learn how to use google and database searching... pretty easy but a fair bit of work on the assignments. i ended up with a 6.
|
For my electives I ended up doing the basic business subject and the managment subject...
Easy to do well in, but boring as f***. The hottie factor compared to all the IT subs is crazy high :P I did one linux subject during my course, I wanted to stab my brain out after ther first couple of tuts. Oh go buy this work booklet for $30 then sit at a computer, follow the book and make all these virtual connections or search help files to find answers to stuff... It was the most boring piece of s*** on the planet, plus the people running the tutorial I was in barely had a grasp on the english language so if you couldn't do something, it'd take then 5 mins to try an understand what you were asking then their response pretty much made no sense. So you were no better off than you were to begin with. I honestly have no idea how I managed to pass that steaming pile of crap. It was waaaaaaaaaay more interesting installing Fedora and just fiddling round with that myself at home. I'd choose death everytime if I had to do the kinda s*** I saw in that subject everday as a job. last edited by rubba-chikin at 09:25:25 18/Jan/07 |
haha rubba-chikin are you talking about unix administration? I did that subject too. Its soo gay! They give you 1 hour to do a practical which takes about 3-5 hours to do, then yeah the instructions are useless and so is the help. There aren't any assignments just two tests worth 30% and 70% so you can't feel safe until you sit the final.
|
yeah i did unix network administration first semester last year, got a 5 so wasnt too miffed, but still it was pretty gay
doing ITS701 and ITB003 this semester, hopefully they offer evening classes for 701 because if not im screwed, ive been emailing the coordinators basically abusing them for not releasing any info about possible evening classes for part time students ITS702 and ITB720 i think im doing in 2nd semester |
fireblood: itb730 is pretty easy if you just practice the 'workshops' its a fair bit of content to learn. but the two mid sem 'quizs' are basically questions from the workshops.
I actually found unix network admin fun, enjoyable and probably one of the most worthwhile subjects i've done at uni. I missed out on a 7 by a few percent which i was cut at but hey that s*** happens. I also had to put up with tung again and his nubness. I'll agree that there was a major lack of time allocated for tuts. rubba-chicken; can you remember which business subjects you did exactly? any you would recommend? |
Are you f*****g crazy?! You enjoyed that s***?! :P
I think I still have all my uni crap on my HDD... lets see... Hrm it appears I was mistaken, one was Law/IT and the other Business Management BSB213 - Law That was actually pretty easy, just the mandatory tuts ate ballbags. This sub had group arseignments too when I did it. MGB218 - Management crap All about managing business looking at finance, marketing and other miscellaneous bulls***. Downside to this was having to sift through pages of crap for assignments, plus group assignments. Also the guest speakers bar one all sucked so bad I left in the halftime breaks. last edited by rubba-chikin at 21:48:28 18/Jan/07 |
