as I sit here groovy to the music, and the bass tickling my floor/seat/walls, I thought about how different my computer set up (sound wise) has changed, gone are the "it will do" logitech 2.1 set ups, purchased on the cheap on an as needed bases,
now my stereo which was feeling unloved and unused on when my old TV died has found it's way to not only being a great monitor support, but is no permanently hooked up to the PC this is the bad boy http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?hlt=Link_Overview&scy=AU&slg=ENG&session=20080428002810_202.4.79.70&ctn=MX5500D/21S got it originally as a DVD player (back when I had a big VHS collection, and it was normal to still have a VHS collection) (moving it to the PC was the best thing ever, the center speaker sits under my primary monitor so it looks neat (even tho my desk is far from neat) and glad I have an amp doing the job that i can change the source of quickly and with little fuss so how does everyone else listen to the computer noise? |
I use some speakers. Sometimes my headphones.
|
Headphones, they're like a hundred years old but still good.
Bought some speakers once thinking that I'd like, try to have a social life or something, and have people around for movies because I finally had my own place. Then it flooded and now I don't live near anybody. The moral of the story is that speakers = floods and lonely despair via tempting murphy's law. Stick to headphones kids. |
I mostly use headphones so outside noise doesn't distract me from gaming, plus with the frequency response of these headphones way up there, I can hear footsteps a mile away. People accuse me of wallhacking all the time because OMG WTF HOW DID YOU KNOW I WAS THERE???!!!!1111
Speakers are z5500, they do the job but I rarely use them. Musc/TV goes through my headphones so no one else can hear the crap I listen to, or what I'm watching. |
I just use some of those logitech 5500s in 5.1 for when no one is home or i'm cleaning and I want to listen to music. Otherwise I got my headphones on. I know everyone rags on Logitech speakers but I tried a really high quality pair of speakers and I couldn't tell the difference so I don't know what people are on about.
|
I used to have a 5.1 setup with an audigy card
Now I use the onboard sound with the monitor speaker. |
Have my Logitech Z506 5.1 surround sound for everyday use, sounds amazing with BF3 pumping through. Use my Logtech G930's as my headset for Skype/Teamspeak and if the girls have gone to bed I chuck game sound through them, and they are just as awesome as my speakers.
I have no sound card, never bothered to get one as I see no real reason, motherboard sound is perfectly fine. |

By "good" I think the audiophiles mean a set of $5000 speakers. To me the logitech ones sound kind of flat and lifeless but they're perfect for listening to music around the house and for playing games, I'm not putting on a concert or running a movie theatre. |
I'm still using my old Altec Lansing MX-5021's as they still sound fantastic.
I have been looking to upgrade, but nothing really seems to come close to what I already have. |
I use headphones 90% of the time, only bust out speakers occasionally and when I am using speakers its some set of logitech 2.1 speakers I've had forever, so they're nothing special.
I do have really good quality headphones though. I'm just using onboard sound atm, but I've been wondering whether its worth getting a dedicated sound card and whether it would sound any better, just not sure its really worth it though. There doesn't really seem to be any point to sound cards anymore. |
I've got Sennheiser RS120s for headphones and Logitech Z-5500s for a stezza

Razer Megalodon is a 7.1 Surround Sound Gaming Headset

I've got an amp and two nice big speakers hooked up
|
I too appear to fall into the popular category of 'Logitech Z-5500D's' and headphones (which are the wireless G-930's).
I use the headphones 99% of the time these days (living in a small apartment) but the Z-55's are still good to crank tunes on. Also, after 'Creative's efforts at f*****g the world over with their drivers post Windows Vista Launch (what's that, one model of this sound card had a gameport on it... well, we abandoned making drivers for that) I'm using on-board sound as there isn't really a decent sound card on the market that isn't based on Creative's chipset. |

i found 2 pairs of hp890's on ebay in 2007 so i bought both of em.
the pair i'm using i got in 2002 and are still going strong albeit with lots of super glue, but i should be good for headphones for 30+ years :) |
Z5500's and ATH-AD900's for headphones, seems like a popular combo.
By "good" I think the audiophiles mean a set of $5000 speakers. To me the logitech ones sound kind of flat and lifeless but they're perfect for listening to music around the house and for playing games, I'm not putting on a concert or running a movie theatre.I kinda agree though I think they are great for movies and games, I hate them for music because they are so flat. I like them for movies because it's easy to hear the dialogue, that can tend to get washed out on some systems but the Z5500's are pretty good at it. |
Running Z5500's and ATH-AD900's for headphones
I hate my Z5500 want to sell them!!! running sound card X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion Series http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=1&subCatID=208&prodID=16559&prodName=X-Fi%20Platinum%20Fatal1ty%20Champion%20Series&subCatName=X-Fi&CatName=Sound+Blaster&VARSET=prodfaq:PRODFAQ_16559,VARSET=CategoryID:1 |
Z5500 = rubbish lol,
Edifer S550's is where its at, or if your keen build a system from audioengines a5's very nice: http://www.nitroware.net/reviews/130-edifier-s550-51-multimedia-speaker-review.html http://www.loopinsight.com/2011/03/22/review-audioengine-a5-s8-combination-speaker-system/ Well thats without going for a full HT Amp / speaker combo |
Yeah, ATH-AD900's are the headphones I've got too.
I have a set of the logitech G35's as well that I use for any gaming where I require a mic. |
Z5500 = rubbish lol, Those s550's are twice the price I paid for my z5500. I'm ok if they're "rubbish" compared to them. However if you're dumb enough to buy z5500's for $500 (which is how much places like HN try to off them at) then you're a bit of a dumbass. Running asus xonar d2 through an optical cable, going strong for ~5 years. Happy camper |

I'm just using onboard sound atm, but I've been wondering whether its worth getting a dedicated sound card and whether it would sound any better, just not sure its really worth it though. There doesn't really seem to be any point to sound cards anymore. I used to think that, until one day I decided to just buy an Asus Xonar soundcard. It really does make a difference, on-board audio definitely falls short. The Dolby Headphone capabilities are awesome too. You know that Virtual Barbershop thing? That sounds like total surround sound with nothing more than a pair of stereo headphones? Some soundcards let you do that with your games. I have my soundcard set to 5.1 surround but with Dolby Headphone enabled, and it gives an awesome sense of direction to the audio in all of my games. 5.1 headphones seem a bit s*** to me. Why pay a heap for headphones with with 3 or 4 small drivers in each ear when you could pay the same for some good Audio Technica or Sennheiser headphones, and still get the benefits of surround sound? |
audio technica ATD-700 (the more open ones?) so I can hear the child and wife while gaming, closed headphones are a no no. I would use this 70% of the time.
I also have a cheapy 2 speaker+sub logitech system, can't even remember what it's called but it does the job OK. |
I'm stuck in Logitech 2.1 world. but it's ok here. i use my main AV system if i want a good blast of music.
i also have Logitech 5.1 on my xbox which gives some nice sounds. they do make fairly decent low to mid range gear. |
