Props to Casa for pointing this out...
http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/hottest100_alltime/voting/ To celebrate 20 years of the Hottest 100, we're throwing our collective arms up in the air in a bid for enlightenment and asking you: What is your hottest song of all time? Post your all time top 10 here, I should really lead off, but it's 1am here and I want to put some effort into it, so many awesome songs and you can only select 10 :/ |

I find it realy hard to pick top individual songs, it should be top albums.
|
Yeah, this is going to be really tough. Only song I know for sure off-the-cuff is Radiohead - Paranoid Android
|
Love will tear us apart? As the BEST song of all time? Really? apparently me and the rest of australia agree that you are wrong i think its already been no1 hottest 100 a few years in a row |
I've never heard that song before, so I youtubed it.
Is someone taking the piss? That song sucks, in every single way it's possible to suck. wtf |
Why don't they just put together the #1 song from each year's hottest 100?
|
Yeah I dont get the Joy division song, I mean its not a terrible song, but best all time song, Realy??
|
YAY.. I have been waiting to do this.
and urgh, this is going to be way too hard to pick... :\ last edited by Joanna at 10:58:54 02/Jun/09 |
haha love will tear us apart, what a joke i like how they had to change the rules to stop it winning all the time: Hottest 100 top fives and summaries |
Yeah, but I think the new rules are better. Promotes circulation of music and growth for new artists.
As for Love will tear us apart - great song, but wouldn't get my No. 1 vote. Hmm, think I might put Leonhard Cohen in somewhere. Still working on mine. |
smells like teen spirit - hell yeah.
|
My list!
1. Underworld - Born Slippy 2. New Order - Blue Monday 3. Joy Division - Love will tear us apart 4. The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army 5. Faithless - Insomnia 6. muse - knights of cydonia 7. The Prodigy - Breathe 8. Massive Attack - Angel 9. Beastie Boys - Sabotage 10. The Chemical Brothers - Setting Sun |
f*** this is impossible
my list would include fleetwood mac aussie crawl inxs ratm daft punk metallica oasis something like that i dont see how u can pick a band that has even been created in the last 10 years because all the other older bands that still receive so much praise for songs would surely rape them - they have another whole generation or 2 voting for them |
The Beatles - Hey Jude
Simon & Garfunkel - America Muse - Knights of Cydonia Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb Elliott Smith - Miss Misery Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven Oasis - Don't Look Back In Anger Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees Silverchair - Tomorrow Had to basically pick some landmark songs in the various genres, otherwise there would just be 5 Beatles songs, 3 Simon and Garfunkel and 2 Muse songs. Didn't have room for Chuck Berry, Crowded House, The Shins, Rush, RATM, the list goes on... |
Disney - He Lives in You (Reprise) |
Love Will Tear Us Apart was huge not just because of the song itself, but the background story. If you want to get a grasp of the whole thing, go see 'Control' or even '24 Hour Party People'. Basically the lead singer - Ian Curtis - killed himself on the eve of the band doing their first US tour, and maybe the album release (not sure). He was seen as a bit of a poet figure in the 80s, and I guess this was all still relatively fresh when Love Will Tear Us Apart came out, and was subsequently voted as number 1.
|
havent seen control, did see 24 hour party people
was pretty painful watching unfortunatley |
1. Daft Punk - Harder Better Faster Stronger
2. Joy Division - Love will tear us apart 3. Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit 4. Underworld - Born Slippy 5. New Order - Blue Monday 6. Faithless - Tarantula 7. Muse - time is running out 8. The Prodigy - Smack my B**** up 9. The Beatles - Hey Jude 10. Oasis - Champagne Supernova Honerable Mentions: Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees Silverchair - Tomorrow RATM - Killing in the name of |
How the hell have you people already picked 10?
|
It was hard. I tried to find a spot for killing in the name of, but I couldn't justify moving any of my 10.
|
How the hell have you people already picked 10? i did mention in the other musak thread that im very good at music; |
havent seen control, did see 24 hour party people so was control. bleak dismal uk whingefest :P i was a fan of joy division & later, new order back in the day but i still found control to be pretentious n tedious :( |
peter hook is the master of the bass line
|
1 - Metallica - Nothing Else Matters
2 - Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb 3 - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody 4 - Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven 5 - The Eagles - Hotel California 6 - Disturbed - Prayer 7 - Cold Chisel - Khe Sahn 8 - The Doors - Riders on the Storm 9 - Live - Lightning Crashes 10 - Pearl Jam - Alive I still have the 1998 (or maybe 97) hottest 100 of all time on vhs, when it was simulcast on rage over two nights. Damned good and introduced me to a bunch of awesome songs I'd never heard of. I think Smells like Teen spirit won it that year. Metallica had two songs in the top 20, one and enter sandman. Pearl Jam had Black and alive in the top 20. |
I don't recall of the top 10 from their last Hottest 100 of All Time, but I remember that Smells Like Teen Spirit was #1, there was a Hunters&Collector's song at #2, Pearl Jam's Alive was #3, #5 and #7 (I forget the order) was I think Bohemian Rhapsody and Stairway to Heaven and #10 was Pearl Jam's Black.
|
7 - Cold Chisel - Khe Sahn fyi, this is the worst song ever written |
New Order - True Faith
The Animals - House of the Rising Sun Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody David Bowie - Major Tom The Cure - Close to me Blondie - Heart of Glass Run DMC - It's like that Radiohead - Creep Pink Floyd - Wish you were here Nirvana - In Bloom |
same one I'm thinking of Ruhk. Pretty sure it was Throw your arms around me by H&C.
Spook is teh gay. |
1. Internationale - Any trades hall choir or Mechanics institute

Ice - Magic Dirt 10. Come as you are - Nirvana Honourable Mentions - Galaxy Song - Monty Python Pyramid song - RadioHead Ring of the Neibelung - Wagner Reuben James - Conway Twitty I'm in love with my car - Queen |
All I know is #1 is Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody I was gonna say exactly the same thing, I though the elite QGL people would rubbish the song though, but I reckon its an epic song, its got everything, its got one of the best guitar riffs ever in it. Also pearl jam - Black, definatly top 10, along with radiohead - paranoid android. |
NUMBER 1 - CAKE - The Distance
The Offspring - Gone Away Muse - Knights Of Cydonia Rage Against the Machine - Killing In The Name Radiohead - Karma Police Depeche Mode - It's No Good Roy Orbison - You Got It R.E.M. - Drive Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son DIDNT really stress too hard about these votes, i figure some nerd group or forum like 4chan is going to use its numbers to vote something like rick astley to no.1 |
Albums would have been a lot more interesting I think. The only song I'd have in my top 10 that would also have been on an album in my top 10 would be Radiohead - Paranoid Android.
|
wow, never heard of Love will tear us apart.. wish I never did. Terrible.
|
It is terrible, and any of you f*****s that voted for love will tear us apart should die a slow painful death....
|
Aight, here it is. This was so so hard to narrow down to ten. I tried to span some time with my votes - otherwise you get too tempted to put only new tracks in, what you love at the moment kinda thing.
Radiohead - Paranoid Android Robert Miles - Children Beck - Debra Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah Radiohead - Pyramid Song Ben Folds Five - Underground Tool - Sober Nine Inch Nails - The Perfect Drug The Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 Machine Gun Fellatio - Unsent Letter |
One song I forgot and should have included, also a band I haven't seen mentioned once so far in top 10s.
Guns and Roses - November Rain |
Guns and Roses - November Rain you are the worst person at music evar |
01. janis joplin - summertime 02. butterfly effect - the cell 03. coheed and cambria - in keeping secrets of silent earth 04. disposable heroes of hyprocrisy - television 05. the doors - peace frog 06. faith no more - epic 07. david bowie - life on mars 08. flight of the conchords - bowie 09. mary hopkins - those were the days 10. bob dylan - times are a changin' no hip cool joy division as very overhyped. love will tear us apart has a haunting quality to it, but isnt that great a song imho. its nearly as bad as someone saying there good at music... are ya ???? |
OK I think I got this... simply red - fairground presets - my peolpe fleetwood mac - everywhere nirvana - smells like teen spirit metallica - one tool - stinkfist dream theatre - the glass prison led zeppelin - achilles last stand jimi hendrix - voodoo child underworld - born slippy s***, yes. this is a great list imho............ in a perfect world but, wouldnt the lonely island take out the entire top 10? and T-pain would be all over this hottest 100!!! bets are on in regards to how many songs are in the chart that Dave Grohl has had something to do with.........im guessing 15 to 20...... last edited by louie at 18:57:57 14/Jun/09 last edited by louie at 19:01:56 14/Jun/09 |
Mooby - that sig is breaking my page.
|
haha... wait..r ealyl? :(Like Queen is any better? I reckon spooks nailed a few of them... no way I could be f***ed dedicating the amount of time neccesary to do this. last edited by qmass at 23:19:49 14/Jun/09 |
Is it only bands that are in a database or any songs at all?
|
Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch - Good Vibrations
Snow - Informer Kriss Kross - Jump Peter Andre - Mysterious Girl Tag Team - Whoomp! There It Is House Of pain - Jump Around DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince - Boom Shake The Room Reel 2 Real - I Like To Move It Salt-N-Pepa - Push It SNAP! - Rhythm is a Dancer |
Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch - Good VibrationsIf you wake up alive tomorrow, you are going to be f*****g lucky |
Guvna you have created some sort of youtube camp god playlist.
An hour of solid entertainment. |
I can't believe nobody has gone for
Prince - Batdance ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLlQpc8D2Kc ) or Dio - Holy Diver ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sj7UBgVVew8 ) |
or Dio - Holy Diver ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sj7UBgVVew8 ) Oh mannnn, why didn't you post before I was reminded of voting in this thread :( |
Most of the songs r_Mazing listed are better than 80% of the crap that makes the coutdown each year, and about 95% of the crap played during the day.
|
And so it begins!!!! It's starting today!!!! Woohoo
|
I also hope that MJ doesn't end up winning out of Sympathy!
|
When did voting close? It may have been early enough to avoid the MJ influence..
|
List so far: 91-100
List so far: 81-90 Discuss. Glad 'Common People' made it in. There are some really strange ones in that lot for me though. Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack?? - wouldn't have made it into my list. It's a good song, but not 100 of all time. None of my songs in 81-100. |
None of my songs in the 81-100. I did forget how awesome Unfinished Sympathy is tho. Good to see Common People and Bulls on parade in there tho.
|
Very random list so far. One more time ftw.
|
STOP! It's Hammer Time!
You underestimate the power of the voting demographics! Anyway, Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody: Better be close to the top 10 or 20. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart: That will be in there somewhere. Massive Attack - Teardrop I expect this around the 50ish mark. I wonder if any songs by The Cure or The Doors will get in? |
Just got my first entry in the 100, Comfortably Numb at #53. Disappointingly low considering a lot of people regard it as having the best guitar solo ever.
|
I thought it'd rate higher as well... oh well it happens mate.
|
Disappointingly low considering a lot of people regard it as having the best guitar solo ever. Bet you Sweet Child o' Mine gets in ahead of that, for that very reason... |
Still nothing in my list!!! God damnit.
I'm waiting for United Breaks Guitars to enter the chart...hehe |
So who is listening.. top 20 got off to a pretty s***** start.. top 11 is going good so far..but don't know that fooies should be infront of led zep or lennon..
|
down to #5. been good listening so far.
|
how much does radiohead wanna appear.. ugh.. good band ugh..
|
F*** yes, love will tear us apart didn't make #1. thank f***, terrible song.
|
someone tell me how love will tear us apart is popular.. that was f***** boring as..
HALLELUJAH!!! Definately deserves top 3 spot.. beautiful song and an amazing voice. |
yuo are extremely bad at music damo
|
I suppose you have to be an old man from spooks epoch to like that song.
|
umm no... i was bored during that song..
|
thinking nirvana - smells like teen spirit for #1
|
no surprise at all..
Now they just need to do GREATEST 100 of all time.. |
lol @ nirvana as no.1. how predictable
|
Glad Paranoid Android and Hallelujah were up there. I'm with Damo on the Joy Division song. It's a good song, but not worthy of all the credit it seems to get.
Well, my list didn't do too well all in all.
Three songs, one at number 35 and two in the top 5. |
Overall I thought the top 100 was f*****g woeful.
|
oh noes people have different tastes in music |
Can anyone post the full list, I can't get access to the page, they must limit international traffic - it just keeps timing out :/
|
Delivered.
|
That list is a joke, even for some of those artists high up on the list, those are not their best songs.
|
I'm surprised how little I identify with the last. I have probably been listening to triplej for about 13-14 years at a guess. I never would have considered voting for Johnny Cash, The Beatles, stuff like that, because I just don't feel that kind of music represents my generation. But I know plenty of 40-50+ year olds that are regular J's listeners. There must be more of them than you think.
|
wtf is up with 'joy division - love will tear us apart' ? It's one of the worst songs I've ever heard, in all facets, and people go on about it like it's the bees knees?
|
reckon:
still cant believe joy division wasnt no1 this list is obviously rorted |
it's not surprising the list won't fully please anyone due to the wider range available to vote for. yas have gotta realise that other people have different taste in music... kinda my point in asking what's the point of a hot100 of all time :/ so everyone can have a spew about music they don't like being in the same list as music they do like? ;p
still cant believe joy division wasnt no1 so you're saying the no.1 track of all time should be a guitar heavy rock song? ;D last edited by demon at 09:50:17 13/Jul/09 |
* 2. s*** yeah |
Triple J and I are through professionally.
|
Hilltop hoods are good and all, but top 100 songs of all time, Im not sure about that. And no soundgarded, what the?
Also no, The Who Black Sabbath U2 Van Halen Surely they would have at least 1. |
Triple J and I are through professionally. I don't understand peeps that are blaming Triplej, though. There's a lot of your type. But they just play the list that the people voted for. I don't know why people are saying statements like this. |
Okay - but on the Hottest 100 (on aus day) they played sex on fire.. TWICE...
TWICE... in a row... that was BAD. |
I knew it would be Smells like teen spirit. F*** yeah!
|
Ha! At a glance i can only spot massive attack, tear drop, to have female vocals... wow.
|
Triple J and I are through professionally. Unfortunately, you don't have other choices |
* 6. I have always been baffled why people like this song. And I'm a huge Queen/Freddie Mercury fan, but it's long, it drones on, and there are far and better Queen singles, eg Headlong, Breakthrough, Good old fashioned lover boy, Innuendo... I just don't get what people like about Rhapsody over others. |
I don't understand peeps that are blaming Triplej, though. There's a lot of your type. But they just play the list that the people voted for. I don't know why people are saying statements like this. Really? Are you sure about this (the bit where you say they just play what people vote for)? |
I have always been baffled why people like this song. And I'm a huge Queen/Freddie Mercury fan, but it's long, it drones on, and there are far and better Queen singles, eg Headlong, Breakthrough, Good old fashioned lover boy, Innuendo... I just don't get what people like about Rhapsody over others. my favourite queen song is that catchy ad about getting rid of car tolls! |
wow, I wouldn't rate any of those Queen songs above Bohemian. I would have said Innuendo is clearly the best from that list by an order of magnitude.* 6.I have always been baffled why people like this song. And I'm a huge Queen/Freddie Mercury fan, but it's long, it drones on, and there are far and better Queen singles, eg Headlong, Breakthrough, Good old fashioned lover boy, Innuendo... I just don't get what people like about Rhapsody over others. I am a big Queen fan and Bohemian is definitely my favourite song. But I basically love all of the rest of them equally and only a notch below it. |
There's not that many influential female singers in the past 20 years....
Only one that i can think of in the last 50 years has been Janis Joplin... that's just my personal opinion though. |
Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Britney Spears...
|
lady gaga He said 'female' singers... |
Aye, I'm a fan of Sarah Blasko except for her interview character. She has a 'softly softly' voice that makes me want to slap her and say, "SPEAK PROPERLY!"
Nice to look at though. In the female singers dept I don't mind Ladyhawke for some local [NZ] action. |
Yes.. I agree... Genius.. Surprisingly, a lot of people HATE her. I don't understand why though. |
u and trog should make out and have babies that are equally as bad at music as you guys are!
|
Nah - trog is too power thirsty for my likings.
I'd much prefer to make you with your deck.. =) |
zomg, HAWT HAWT
and in time, over the years, i could teach you about music and how to be better at it! |
