i also think kat sounds unprofessional, some names don't when you shorten them, but it kathleen really supposed to be shortened to kat, it's more of a nickname. kath maybe.

See again to me, Cathy is not informal compare to Catherine. Like Grunt said, some names sounds ok even if you shorten them. Perhaps Kat sounds to much like cat, which really more like a pet/nick name. But if someone else in your office is allow to be called "Kat" as you claimed then I don't see why they won't let you change yours. Unless of course the other person real name is Kat then they'd have no choice.

I don't get hang ups on names ... My grade 1 teacher called me Shane, more people call me Obes then Sean *shrug*. But I accept some people do have issues with it.
