my uncle wants to buy a 15" LCD screen and he asked me to help. im not one who knows much about LCD screens. so just wondering, does anyone recomend a good 15" LCD? nothing too overpriced.
thx |
Samsung & NEC/Mitsubishi have the best LCD monitors at the moment.

One of my friends has a 17" Hitachi and that looks pretty sweet. I'm looking to buy a 19" one soon but the only ones I can find have a refresh time of 25ms. Are games playable at this refresh time or should I wait until they are around 16ms?
|
Tim - depends on how demanding you are. I play regularly at lans with an LCD with higher than 25ms response time and it doesn't bother me too much. I'm more annoyed by the problems with contrast, dark browns, well any really dark colours all just look black. Your best bet if you want to buy one for gaming is find someone with an LCD and give it a whirl. See whether it blurs too much for your liking.
Pity the one with the TV tuner is so expensive. It doubles the price :( |
i would advise the benq for price, sony or hitachi for quality
personally, i think the lcd+tuner are extremely bad value, yet a good idea. i get annoyed with any responses over 25ms, esp. with ut2k3 and bf1942 and the like. i have seen a diamondview one with the doom 3 alpha running just fine though... and i thought they were a s*** company |
Are games playable at this refresh time or should I wait until they are around 16ms? It depends on what games you play. For RTS games 25ms is fine, however if you are playing FPS or games where the whole screen changes regularly then you will see ghosting. Unfortunately you cant buy 19" LCD's with a 16ms response, which is why I decided to go for a 17" instead. With 16ms response you wont notice ghosting at all really. I used to play competitive CS so I notice these things but 16ms didn't bother me at all. If you're going to GS siege you can see it in action then if you want. I have the BenQ fp767 and they're only $650 odd now which is awesome. (I paid $800 when I got mine:( The other brans may be considered to be better quality than the Benq, but you wont find them with a 16ms response (except for the hitachi which uses the same screen as the BenQ) The Benq has good contrast and brightness (its a tad dark in dark scenes but thats quite common) Cant beat it for price/performance imo. |
plasma screen computer monitors are due out soon...
but they will be mega $$$$ |
The hitachi sacrifices colour reproduction in order to achieve it's good pixel response rate.
Sad. |
I have a 17 Inch Hyundai Image Quest L70B LCD its good and has response time of 20ms, it cost me $800 in March
|
The ones with the response time of 16 arn't meant to be as good as the one's with 20. The one's with 16 only truely do 16 bit colour. When it needs another colour it gets 2 close colours and alternates it to make it look right. It will still look good but it makes the response slower in certain instances. I think there was an articale at tomshardware about it somewhere.

I believe the LG lcds are made in the exact same factory as the Benq ones. But one is $50 cheaper...
|
ah k, thx guys. it seems that benq seems to be a good choice. and this pixel response of <25 is this common in most LCD's? or are do u only see that in good quality ones?
and a 15" for <$500? wow tahts not bad. next question. where would u guys recommend buying one from? please dont say some online store =) thx |
