I used to play the Urban Terror mod a lot when it came out and one thing I noticed was how it phrased the message text on the screen when you fragged someone. I can't remember the exact phrasing but it was like "Little Johnny was blown away by Mr X". As such I decided it would bring me a laugh if it said "Little Johnny was blown away by Some Fat Bastard". Hence my nick on QGL. BTW I don't use that nick anywhere else anymore.

How about you?

My first online nick was during the Powerup Q1 days and it was "Buzzsaw". Later after "some fat bastard" I switched my online gaming nick to "Jock Rot" and had that for years. Now it's "Thick as 2 Planks". I dropped the "short" from the phrase cause it wouldn't fit on the screen.

EDIT: The reason for Jock Rot was when I was in grade 12 in the 70's there was a "skeg" i.e. surfer, who never bathed during the week as he believed surfing on the weekend was more than enough for a weekly bath. As it was he got jock rot from his groin to his knees and it took months to clear it up. That always stuck in my head.

EDIT: BTW we gave the skeg a nickname of "Pigsy" and this was before Pigsy in Monkey Magic came on TV.

I was looking for a nick with style. Pizazz. Oomph.
I wanted it to sound like a super hero or a carnival attraction...The Incredible...Vegetable. It sounds funny to me I guess, the oppositional nature of something being incredible but also a vegetable (traditionally not particularly incredible). It was just a random thoughht, no real story as such.

Other nicks I have used:
sonofgasman (ref to the TV show Bottom) (Quake, Quake 2)
Fatal_Bert (Fat Albert) (LAN Kingpin)
YourMum'sCuddly (ref to the old "Cuddly" laundry liquid ad starring Mike Whitney) current used for whatever games I play - TF2, BF3 (Xbox) etc
open wound (Q3)
The F***you Man (later changed to F.U.M - from Eddie Murphy) (Kingpin clan nick and one that stuck)

probably others I've forgotten. I never really changed nicks once I started playing a game seriously, but usually if I start a new game I jazz it up with a new name. YourMum'sCuddly is a pretty staple one these days though.

As for other forums...well that'd be telling.

I chose mine in 1996 (I think) I was using 'Bobcat' and 'Buzzsaw' for a time there, but (and I find it amusing that someone in this thread was using 'buzzsaw' :P) they were often taken or unavailable.

So there I was watching a doco about Nuclear weapons tests and I learned about 'Operation Ivy' and it's two bombs 'Mike' and 'King'
I thought the idea of being named after a massive explosive kinda resembled the way I played games at the time (being all of 13) as I tended to smash the s*** out of my opposition, or ragequit, both having a lasting impact on what I was playing.

My name is Michael, and not being very original I chose 'IVY_MiKe'. Absurdly, there are others out there who use this as a handle, but where I can I try to jump on the nickname as quickly as possible.

and here I thought it was just a coincidence that Troghouseofporn.com used to play the midi version of Queen's 'I want it all' when you tapped in their url :P

- original name was JIM as it was the only thing that would fit into the high score chart on the old 20 cent arcade machines... this kinda works as my name is James. The butler did it.

- I changed it from Jim to Jeyzus ( cause that's the sound you n00bs cry out as I'm slawing ya, though you guys add more letter e's in there :P ) when I went to my first Yeronga QGL LAN. Apparently one of the admins had 'JIM' already bolted down and it was considered poor form to imitate one of them. To this day it still s**** me having my old nick associated with such a gumby player XD... and the guy's name isn't even James!

- 'Jeyzus' offended too many of the friends and family who were religious zealots so I changed it to 'koopz' as all my old brother's mates called me 'little Coops' when I was a youngun. 'Coops' (and easy alternatives) were taken to I went with the 'k' instead.

These days close mates and family just call me 'Jey', and I usually change ingame nick back to 'Jeyzus' to keep them on their toes ;)

My nick IRL as well. Bought drunk mate a c***tail called "Pink Bits" and my slightly Aspergers friend kept calling me "Pink Bits" for days after and it stuck. People called me "Pink Bits" thereafter but they were more making fun of that guy than giving me a meaningful nickname. Quickly shortened to Pinky.

I play a lot of sport and there are a lot of Ryans out there so I just started introducing myself to new teams as Pinky. It's pretty much my actual name now. More people know me as Pinky than as Ryan. Quite a lot of people I know IRL don't even know my real name :-/ Unless I have them on Facebook or whatever. It trips people out when they find out my name is Ryan, which is pretty funny.

I really enjoy telling older people that my name is Pinky because you can very quickly judge a person by how they react. If they find it immature then I know that person isn't worth my time.

I was like 10 years old and had just got a sega mega drive. I used to think sharks were cool and mashed the names into shark-cool which became shar-kuul.

I've had the Nic for like 15years since

Needed something to sign up to QGL with back in the day while at a LAN at Scoobys thinking hard for 5 minutes until f***nukle popped into my head, jazzed it up to F**NuKle as was the rage at the time used it for everywhere that allowed it if not used NuKleHeaD.
Then shortened it to fnukle to make life easier as more and more username rules came into play.

Otherwise I use lomu from Jonah Lomu who was my childhood All Black hero.

One of the futsal teams I played for was made up of a bunch of dodgy looking players from the subcontinent who were also into cricket, so we decided to call our team The Match Fixers. That's where I got the name from but then decided to shorten it to Fixah cause I didn't like being referred to as MF and I ain't no ma fuqqah na mean na sayin.

Came from a book I read in high school, 'Operation Faust'. This weird little Russian caper about corruption and home-grown terrorism.

It's obscure enough that no-one gets it first in games. Guys from here that I've played with on BF and other steam games will know me as 'Revelation.' not as unique. Another one I use is Aramanthius, name I made up for the demon in my book.

Sip@d0r was mine back in the Enemy Territory GameArena league days. Originally stole the idea from my mate who used to go by Sp@mz0r, so I thought doing something similar would piss him off but stuck with it once everyone got to know me by that alias. After my ET days and moved into CSS and other such games so I toned it down a little to Sipador and generally since then I prefer to go by Sip if the game allows only 3 characters. Eventually I think I'll just be called 'S' lol.

My name came from someone telling me I was a walking joke when I was a kid and I threw the comeback, "I'm just a parody of you". It stuck in my head when I needed to put down a nickname and it was something you wouldn't find in use.

Mine was orginally a piss-take on an orginal Queen Album which had a spelling mistake on the word Bohemian. My friends playing CS at the time knew it was me and as we were all into the same music, knew what it was about. It has stuck ever since.

When I first went online (probably around 98) I used the nick MF_Luder which Mulder used in the X-files as an anagram of F. Mulder.

Not sure why but I grew tired of it around the time I started mapping and changed it to Wetwired, which was an X-files episode I liked. As you can guess I was a huge X-Files fan before it went to s***.

stuck with that, but I must have the time I changed pegged to around 1999-2000 as I remember my first map having MF_Luder on it at one stage.
