Over the weekend something unexpected (and huge) happened, over 90 videos and screenshots from the currently in-development Grand Theft Auto VI leaked over at GTA Forums. The thread has since been taken down, but the very early footage showcased gameplay, dialogue, heists, and two playable characters.

One of which is a woman (Lucia), which has been previously rumoured to be the case. Bloomberg reporter and industry insider Jason Schreier took to Twitter to confirm the leaked footage as being very real. "Not that there was much doubt, but I’ve confirmed with Rockstar sources that this weekend’s massive Grand Theft Auto VI leak is indeed real, Jason Schreir wrote. "The footage is early and unfinished, of course. This is one of the biggest leaks in video game history and a nightmare for Rockstar Games."

Rockstar parent company Take 2 Interactive has been diligently removing the leaked footage from YouTube, though due to the huge amount of footage posted there's still quite a bit out there. Like this conversation that feels very GTA in its writing, the obligatory GTA strip club, and restaurant robbery.

The footage is early, unfinished, and not what the final game will look and feel like. But it does confirm multiple playable characters and that the game will take place in a modern-day version of Vice City - GTA's version of Miami. Some of the footage is potentially several years old at this point with references to a PlayStation 4 dev kit. In the end, though this is easily one of the biggest leaks in videogame history and born from a supposed hack that could include source code for both GTA V and GTA 6, with the hacker looking to strike a deal with Rockstar for the assets.

It remains to be seen how this will affect development on GTA 6 going forward.
