As part of a launch event for the new Zen 4 powered AMD Ryzen 7000 series of desktop processors, AMD CEO and president Lisa Su closed out the CPU showcase with a little GPU teaser. The Radeon RX 7000 series was not only confirmed to be running on next-gen RDNA 3 (“Navi 3”) based 5nm architecture, but is on track for launch later this year.
As it was a teaser we don’t know what models will debut this year, as GPU releases tend to be staggered over several months, but much like with the impressive RDNA 2 line-up (which can be found inside the Xbox Series X|S consoles in addition to the Radeon RX 6000 range for PC) there’ll be massive gains coming. In terms of architecture AMD confirms that there will be a 50% increase in performance-per-watt compared to RDNA 2, so yeah, impressive stuff. And this continues on from the similar generational jump that RDNA 2 had over the first generation of RDNA cards.
Considering the Radeon RX 6800 XT is still a beast (check out our review here), it's hard to fathom how crazy the next generation of GPU technology is going to be.
Lisa Su confirmed that testing actual GPUs in the RDNA 3 range is underway and happening inside AMD’s labs. To showcase a little of what to expect she presented footage of Gamescom’s breakout hit Lies of P running on RDNA 3 and a next-gen AMD Ryzen 7950X CPU. No performance indicators or FPS gains compared to the current generation of Radeon cards were given, but the clear takeaway here is that AMD Radeon is very much in the final stages of product development.
You can see the full teaser at the 30-minute mark in the video below, which capped off the AMD Ryzen 7000 presentation.
With NVIDIA also set to launch new GPUs this year (granted it has yet to officially announce the next-gen GeForce RTX 40 series), no doubt AMD is keeping that side of equation under wraps for the moment. With the Zen 4 Ryzen CPUs being designed for “gamers, content creators, and enthusiasts” no doubt it’ll be exciting to get all of the juicy technical info when that’s made available. So stay tuned.
