On a recent episode of Giantbomb show Grubbsnax (thanks VGC), veteran reporter Jeff Grubb revealed some info on the next Need For Speed game. The long-running racing series that has seen its fair share of reboots in recent years. The good news is that Criterion Games is back at the helm, although it's November release will be for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only (and presumably PC).

On the plus side that should mean that it'll look stunning. Where it gets interesting though is when Jeff talks about the visual style for the new entry, which apparently mixes realistic cars and environments with "anime" overlays.

"“It’s going to be photo-realistic, but it’s going to have on top of that, anime elements,” Grubb said. “You know when you see a car commercial or something like that and the car’s driving around, but then cartoons flames and stuff are flying off it? That’s the kind of the aesthetic that they seem to be going for.”

As for the setting the new game will take place in a single fictional city called Lake Shore City, based on Chicago. Also car customisation is coming back in big way, alongside multiplayer. It'll be interesting to see how it fits into the racing genre, though odds are it'll be more open-world Forza Horizon than pure simulation or arcade racing. And with EA recently acquiring Codemasters its got a huge roster of racing games now, so it's great to see Need For Speed coming back... again. Here's hoping this is a return to form.
