As part of the Unreal Engine 5 Release presentation which showcased the impressive advances made with the latest version of the graphics engine, Crystal Dynamics was on hand to announce that the studio has begun development on a new Tomb Raider game.

Which as per the setting, is being developed using Unreal Engine 5.

"We have just started development on our next Tomb Raider game powered by Unreal Engine 5," said Dallas Dickinson, Crystal Dynamics. "Our goal is to push the envelope of fidelity and to deliver the high quality cinematic action-adventure experience that fans deserve from both Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise."

Unreal Engine 5 is going to power a number of high profile releases, including the next The Witcher game from CD Projekt Red. UE5's ability to render highly detailed environments with realistic lighting is being hailed as ground-breaking. Gears of War studio The Coalition has always made full use of Unreal tech, and put together the following compilation of real-time footage to showcase the advances.

And yeah, these sorts of environments would be amazing to see in a new Tomb Raider.
