As per
a new post by Chris Charla, General Manager of Content Curation and Programs over at
Xbox, we learn that the indie focused ID@Xbox program has generated $2.5 billion in royalties over the past decade. With revenue doubling in the past three years alone. This includes hundreds of millions in Game Pass license fees, something Xbox has been relatively quiet about.
As in how the payment structure works for developers. It's not all about revenue, the program has also been the catalyst for features like cross-play and the ease at which developers can release titles on the platform (which includes PC).
"We did a lot of listening – directly learning from developers what they wanted, and what they needed," Chris Charla writes. "They were never shy about telling us what worked, and what didn’t. Innovations like cross-play across other consoles, for example, came directly from ID@Xbox partners. Stemming from their feedback and requests, we made a lot of changes to our back-end publishing systems and even our app framework."
No doubt Xbox Game Pass is a huge part of the overall Xbox brand moving forward, and it's something the ID@Xbox team is embracing. "There are amazing games out today on Xbox (and other platforms!) that would never have existed without the support of Game Pass members, and that’s really been an incredible phenomenon," Chris Charla adds. "Ensuring that millions of Game Pass members get to experience some of the best independent games ever created has been transformational for Xbox players and developers."
Interestingly Chris throws out a few stats, Game Pass subscribers play 30% more genres and 40% more games that those that aren't subscribed. And when it comes to the more, most of those games sit outside of Game Pass.
