Sierra On-Line founders Ken and Roberta Williams have been out of the game, err, game for over twenty years, but they're back... in VR form. With Colossal Cave 3D Adventure being a remake of the old-school text-based Colossal Cave Adventure, an influential release that paved the way for many adventure and role-playing games in the early days of the PC.

It first hit the scene in 1976, when videogames were barely an idea. And with Roberta Williams at the helm she's bringing her vast experience creating classics like King's Quest and the CD-ROM era horror Phanstasmagoria. Sierra of course was also home to Space Quest, Police Quest, and the Leisure Suit Larry series.

"We have completely recreated Colossal Cave for the millions of fans that grew up with it and a new generation of gamers," Ken Williams told PC Gamer. "It takes place in a fully immersive 3D and VR environment for a realistic cave exploration experience that is intended for the whole family."

Here's an early look.

"We had no interest in starting another company," adds Roberta Williams who told PC Gamer that the idea to create a new game came about during lockdown. "We were just looking for something fun to build and I had the idea of paying homage to the game that inspired our company and changed our lives. The game is certainly an adventure game, but also has action elements, humor, cute and fun characters, is scary in places, has a point system, and is incredibly challenging."

Colossal Cave 3D Adventure is set to launch later this year for PC, Mac, and Oculus Quest 2.
