RimWorld is making its way to consoles and with that was put in front of the Australian Classification Board. Where it was refused classification, surprising developers Ludeon Studios. This means RimWorld is illegal to sell within Australia, and with that the PC version that has been available on Steam for is, well, no longer available.
It was assumed that the classification process wouldn't affect the PC version in any way, with Ludeon noting, "We did not expect this to affect the Steam version because in previous similar cases, as with Disco Elysium for example, an RC rating on a console version did not affect the availability of the PC version on Steam."
Existing versions in libraries are available but the
Steam store page now returns an error for those of us in Australia.
As for the reasoning behind its classification refusal, it was chalked up to how it deals with "matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence or revolting or abhorrent phenomena in such a way that they offend against the standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults." Apparently.
"We are working to resolve this situation and make RimWorld available to everyone again as soon as possible," Ludeon Studios adds. "But we don't yet know what that might require or how long it may take."
