As per a new report by the, deep breath, Board of Los Angeles Convention and Tourism Development Commission. The in-person E3 2021 is listed as "Cancelled live event in 2021" -- with word that the license is being reviewed for 2022 and 2023. Naturally this all ties back to the global pandemic and the lack of in-person events like E3 and PAX that saw their 2020 events cancelled.

This all plays into the report from last month where we learned that E3 organisers the ESA were planning a digital three-day event from June 15-17 this year. So, we might be getting details on what that will entail soon.

Last year Geoff Keighley picked up the no-E3 slack with the very cool Summer Games Fest, and that event (which was seen as an E3 replacement of sorts) is set to continue this year.

So the question is, will E3 2021 have its own digital or online presence on par with the E3's of old? Time will tell, though with the big movers and shakers like Sony, Microsoft, Ubisoft, Bethesda, EA, and others doing their own thing outside of E3 in recent years -- publisher and platform-specific digital events to showcase the future of PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PC, will happen either way.

E3 is still something of an institution though, and with the Electronic Entertainment Expo traditionally taking place in June if the digital replacement goes ahead we should expect big reveals, announcements, and in-depth looks at games on the horizon.
