And in 2020
GTA V had its biggest sales success since the game's original debut on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 back in 2013. The ongoing success of Grand Theft Auto V/Grand Theft Auto Online is undeniable -- in Australia it placed second behind Animal Crossing: New Horizons in terms of
2020 game sales.
The 140 million copies figure comes from the latest Take-Two financial call, where Rockstar Games' parent company went through its earnings. As the house of GTA, Civilization, Borderlands, NBA 2K, and others, we also got word that Red Dead Redemption 2 has now surpassed 36 million copies shipped. With both GTA and RDR featuring robust online components -- Rockstar and Take-Two will continue to support both for a while.
That said Take-Two's stock took a hit, with a fall in revenue for the quarter with no new releases on the immediate horizon. Of course the publisher has many titles in the works, from the rumoured new BioShock to the eventual reveal of Grand Theft Auto 6 -- a day that will no doubt see Take-Two's stock price rise considerably.
