Star Wars: X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, all classic
LucasArts flight sims from that era (in the 1990s) when Star Wars gaming was nothing short of awesome. Out this year
EA and
Motive are looking to bring this era back with
Star Wars Squadrons.
In our interview with the game's creative director, Ian Frazier, we not only learned that members of the team are just as fond of these games (in addition to the more arcade-style action of the Rogue Squadron series) but used them as the basis to pitch the game - with a modern twist.
“Many of us on the team are huge fans of the Star Wars flight games from the 90s,” Frazier told us. “The fundamental pitch was, we want to bring back what was awesome about that but in a way that makes sense for modern gamers.”
This is nothing short of great news too, as it means movement for classic ships like the X-wing, A-wing, and TIE fighter is based on flight models that aim to capture the feel of the movies. And that in order to be an ace, you're going to need a lot of practice. Unless of course you have access to
the Force.
“We took [the starfighter handling from the movies and shows] and we went, ‘Okay, where can we find knobs that we can turn up to bring this to the next level to make this more exciting, to make you feel like a badass pilot?’", Frazier explains. "Fundamentally, that’s what we want. We want you to come through this feeling like an ace. And we want to have something that has enough depth and enough of a skill ceiling to it that you have to actually be an ace. There’s cool stuff you can do with the lower skill level that we think players will have a lot of fun with, but we want you to have that sense that when you’ve been playing the game for longer and practicing and trying different stuff, you’re always learning new tricks."
Star Wars: Squadrons is the X-wing vs TIE fighter sequel you’re looking for.
