Dead Island 2's development history is probably only second to Duke Nukem Forever in the troubled stakes. With the team behind the first game, Techland, moving on from the franchise to create the arguably superior Dying Light. From there publisher Deep Silver brought on Yager Interactive which is where this leaked gameplay footage comes from. A five-year old build from 2015.
Unfinished but still very playable, the PC demo and build can be found online for those with capable sleuthing skills. The following gameplay slice comes from YouTube channel GamersPrey - and went live over the weekend.
And sure, it retains the vibrant island setting of the first game and focus on makeshift weaponry blending elemental damage with blades and firearms - but the action looks a little uninteresting. Here's another video that showcases vehicles and more traditional guns.
In the end this version of the game fell apart, with Deep Silver and Yager not seeing eye-to-eye on the direction of the series. The Dead Island 2 saga continued though, with another studio in the form of Sumo Digital taking over - and then exiting stage left.
Currently Dead Island 2 is development at an internal Deep Silver studio - and no doubt the end product will look and feel very different to this. With four studios taking a crack at Dead Island so far, we're definitely keen to see just what gets released with the '2' tag. And when.
