With the project hitting and meeting its Kickstarter goal, with Curse of the Sea Rats lovingly described as a "ratoidvania". Created using hand-drawn 2D animation in the style of many Disney productions from yesteryear, it's promising to deliver a sizable 12-hour campaign alongside support for up to four-players in local co-op.
Here's the stylish announcement trailer.
Curse of the Sea Rats packs all of the best features from the metroidvania genre featuring beautiful 2D hand-drawn animation and 3D environments, combined with unique real-time combat mechanics, brutal final bosses and, of course, a lot of pirates and rats!
As per above, the blend of 2D and 3D works quite well - with a large emphasis placed on combat as you take control of pirates turned into rats by some sort of pirate witch. Curse of the Sea Rats is being developed by the Spain-based PETOONS STUDIO. Metroidvania is one of those genres we can't get enough of too - so this is also a good time to point you to our list of the 20 Best Metroidvania Games we put together last year.
Based on the footage shown, the project looks to be well underway - though no release date or window has been set. Plans are in place to release it on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. And next-gen consoles too. You can check out the Kickstarter campaign here.
