It's the eternal question, when will Star Citizen
be finished? That is, hit Version 1.0 and see an official release. Since 2012 the long in development and big budget crowdfunded space-sim has impressed with its scope and ambition, but over the years progress has sat firmly in the "slow and steady" realm. The latest development roadmap
for the next Alpha release on the other hand has seen more removals than additions.
Admittedly the additions are somewhat minor.
New Babbage – Shop Additions | Introducing a novelty Kiosk in the New Babbage spaceport interior which will sell souvenirs and knick-knacks. Also coming to the spaceport is The Factory Line, a flagship store for microTech, which sells their top of the line products, such as mobiGlas, simpods and various computer-related items.
Elevator Panel Updates | The utilitarian elevator panels are being updated to use interactable screens, as previously this was done through player inner thought.
Heightmap Improvements | Updates are being made to all the heightmaps used on planets and moons to fully take advantage of their higher resolution. This will mean more detail can be utilized during the painting process.
Cutlass Blue | Building, balancing, and implementing the reworked police/militia patrol variant of the Drake Cutlass into the game.
As per this recent Reddit post
, the following image explains the current responses seen on the official forums.
As one backer, Morgan, writes. "Why can't CIG be more competent. we are getting less content per quarter. They put stuff on the roadmap, only to remove them. At this rate, it will take a few years before the game goes into beta. Why can't we talk to the CIG employees? We paid all this money, and yet development is as slow as molasses."
"At this point I'm just sad, mad and disappointed," adds another backer Futurewazzup.
As per the roadmap these features aren't removed from the game but instead being pushed back to Alpha releases due later in the year. Or further out. Of course it's safe to say that with COVID-19 and a shift to remote work for many in game development, the current state of things have been affected in some way. But that brings us back to the eternal question, when will Star Citizen be finished?
