After several leaks and months of speculation Battle Royale is coming back to Call of Duty with the standalone release of Call of Duty: Warzone. 150 players on a huge map with trios available at launch across two game modes - Battle Royale and Plunder. The former being a fight to the last squad standing as the map slowly shrinks due to a deadly gas, with Plunder being a race to score the most loot. And steal loot from fallen competitors.
It goes live tomorrow from 6:00am AEDT on March 11 (for owners of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare) with the game opening up to all four hours after that. A full version of Modern Warfare is not required to play - Warzone will be free for everyone.
Here's a description of the new map - Verdansk.
Warzone takes place in Verdansk, an expansive city with multiple named zones and well over 300 points of interest. Each zone features distinct landmarks like the Gorengard Lumber Yard or the Gora Dam; the zones take place across different environment types like cities and rural areas for unique engagements. Change up your drop location in each match to get a better lay of the land and take advantage of what Verdansk has to offer.
As per the trailer a number of vehicles will be available including ATVs, rovers, SUVs, trucks, and helicopters.
Perhaps the most interesting mechanic is The Gulag, where after your first elimination you're sent to as a prisoner. There you'll wait for your turn to face another inmate in a 1v1 duel to earn the right to get back into the fight. This plays into Contracts, objective based tasks, to earn loot and bonuses including the ability to buy fallen squad members back into the game.
Cash is a thing too and Buy Stations will let you purchase things like the aforementioned freedom in addition to Killstreaks, Self-Revive Kits, and more.
Finally Call of Duty: Warzone shares Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s crossplay functionality across PC, PS4, and Xbox One with progression carrying over from the main game - including customisation and Battle Pass goodies. Call of Duty: Warzone will be a 83-101GB download in standalone form or available as part of a new 18-22GB update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
