Specifically, with the relatively slow progress being in VR tech since the reveal of the very first Oculus Rift prototype. "I'm often kind of grumpy around the office because I really haven't been satisfied with the pace of progress that we've been making," John Carmack said in a video acceptance speech. "When I'm in VR I see the magic there, but my brain is always throwing up these giant 'to do' Post-It Notes on top of everything, reminding me of all the work that's yet to be done."
As the CTO or Chief Technology Officer at Oculus VR, John Carmack is seemingly still waiting for VR tech to finally live up to its potential. This came as he won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the third annual VR Awards - based on his illustrious career that spans decades.
That said, he's still optimistic about the future and feels that VR technology really only began to feel promising after the introduction of the Oculus Rift. And is still a firm believer in the technology one day becoming mainstream.
"All that technology really doesn't mean much until it's brought in service of user value," he added. "So more than anything, I hope that I've been helpful in bringing this new canvas for people to work on, and that the work that those people do will be paving the way in the future."
