As the face of PlayStation at events like E3, today comes the unexpected announcement that Shawn Layden is leaving Sony. A statement was released via Twitter which begins with, "It is with great emotion that we announce that Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden will be departing SIE."

No reason for the departure given, nor a successor named.



Layden had been with Sony since the 1980s and since that time moved up to become the President of Sony Computer Entertainment America before being put in charge of Sony's Worldwide Studios last year. His departure will no doubt be missed by many, though it's safe to say that by taking one look at Sony's Worldwide Studios recent output - he's leaving on a very high note.
