That being the tech that powered the stunning visuals recently seen in the PC release of Final Fantasy XV. Created by Luminous Productions, a subsidiary of Square Enix - the new real-time Back Stage tech demo offers a glimpse at the future of videogame visuals. Especially in terms of full ray tracing and the cinematic potential it can bring.

Check it out. Representing a full implementation of ray tracing the demo encompasses shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion, and diffuse global illumination. All calculated in real-time in what could easily pass for a high-quality pre-rendered cinematic.

This update to the Luminous Engine will apparently be seen in the next game to utilise its technology. Which would most likely be the next project from the team behind Final Fantasy XV.

“Back Stage is a showcase demo of our work to answer the question, 'How can you use ray tracing in a next generation game?' GeForce RTX graphics cards have power beyond our imagination, and with NVIDIA's technology even real-time path tracing has become a reality. Together with Luminous Engine and RTX technology, we have taken one more step forward towards the kind of beautiful and realistic game that we strive to create,” said Takeshi Aramaki, Studio Head of Luminous Productions.

The demo above captures real-time footage from a single NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti card - still the most powerful GPU on the market.
