Waterworld, the Kevin Costner-vehicle and 1990s blockbuster about a world overrun by water from melted ice-caps might be seen as a bit of a joke in some circles. Or a cinematic failure. But, like some grape juice that has been sitting on a rack next to other grape juices for a few decades - it's only gotten better with age. In fact, the recent extended Ulysses Cut is pretty damn amazing.

And well worth checking out. So then, what's the deal with all of this Waterworld talk? Well, new city builder Flotsam's description should fill in that gap.
In Flotsam, players take on the role of a group of survivors in a colorful 2D post-apocalyptic water-world, where the only form of civilization is found on floating garbage towns. Salvaging ocean junk, the game invites players to create their own intricate towns by recycling trash and brave the dangers of the vast sea. Players can guide their villagers through obstacles of recycled garbage, wet ruins, polluted reefs, and sunken wrecks while rescued Seagulls and Dolphins will aid them in their quest to make ends meet in this flooded world.

So yeah, a fun and colourful Waterworld-style city builder. And one that is the polar opposite of the Waterworld game we got. One that has a look that reminds us a little bit of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

According to the developers Flotsam's theme didn't originate from the movie - but we'll let that slide. "Flotsam's theme originated from an animation project one of our founders created, about people living in a flooded world. We took this spark and created a prototype, which eventually grew to become Flotsam," said Juda-Ben Gordier, co-founder at Pajama Llama. "We fell in love with the combination of the setting and gameplay. We all had an urge to create the game, so we did."

Flotsam is coming to Steam Early Access on September 26th, 2019.
