Any upcoming PC release with the tag "Epic Games Store exclusive" might just be the most controversial thing you can do in 2019 - especially for a title that was crowdfunded by fans years ago. A sentiment born from people not being all that impressed with the storefront's lack of features. With the announcement that Shenmue III
's PC release was going to be an Epic Games Store
exclusive - the response was very vocal to say the least.
So much so that Ys Net, Epic Games and Deep Silver have now posted an update
via the game's Kickstarter page that reads.
We want to make sure that the Backers are aware that we are listening to their concerns. We kindly ask all our fans to have some patience, we are currently at E3 demoing the game and need to get back to our respective offices to assess the situation and together find a way forward to justify the trust you placed in us.
Which might lead to the PC release finding its way to other platforms - who knows. As the Epic Games Store was not even a thing when the campaign began, the mention of Steam can be found in some of the older communication between fans and the developers. Of course things can change, but after such a negative backlash we wouldn't be surprised if Shenmue III makes its way to Steam for backers-only. In the same way that Metro Exodus pre-orders were honoured on Steam but no new sales were allowed.
