Citing Steam's 30% revenue take as an unsustainable "30% tax on an entire industry". Richard Geldreich, whose credits include Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Portal 2, and Left 4 Dead 2, took to Twitter to defend the Epic Gamnes Store and champion it as an alternative to Steam.
Which strangely begins with an emotional take on the state of PC gaming, that references EA. Because, it always goes back to EA.
Where he then brought up the whole exclusive releases thing as part of the larger industry, "It’s another storefront. All of them have exclusives. Apple just announced Apple Arcade, which consists of exclusives, yet nobody says a thing. The funding from these exclusives goes to supporting the game devs that create the games you love, so they can make more games."
Before bringing it back to the revenue share model employed by Valve for Steam, "By all means, if you want to support the PC status quo (Valve oppressing developers with its unsustainable 30% cut), by all means stay with Steam. Valve became abusive to its developers, because it thought the printing press would last forever."
Naturally a large part of the backlash towards Epic Games Store exclusives comes down to the storefront lacking a number of features found in Steam. Which, Richard confirms is a big problem.
With Borderlands 3 launching on the platform in September, with a Steam release coming in 2020 - many are looking to Epic to improve the functionality of the storefront in lieu of what is set to be one of the biggest releases of 2019.
