In what's being described as the biggest update to the game so far, due for release on April 30. The Sea of Thieves Anniversary Update will deploy to celebrate year of sailing the high seas - including the previously talked about PvP competitive Arena mode, Tall Tales - Shores of Gold story quests, and a new The Hunter’s Call faction.
Which is where fishing comes into play - and yes, you'll get to cook up your Catch of the Day. It doesn't stop there, as per the description - "Master the art of fishing from shore and from ship, hunt animals and monsters for their meat and cook up delicious (or occasionally poisonous) food." The new Hunter's Call faction will offer its own set of rewards and cosmetic items in addition to contributing to the overarching Sea of Thieves quest to become a pirate legend.
And speaking of quests the Anniversary Update is set to introduce story-driven content into the world for the first time with Tall Tales - Shores of Gold. Where more Tall Tales will come in the future. As per the description, "Follow a series of narrative adventures surrounding existing and all-new characters, taking you to undiscovered places and revealing surprising new gameplay features." That last bit sounds particularly interesting - pointing to perhaps more adventure-like gameplay akin to a single-player or co-op story mission found in other games.
Other features and improvements are also planned for the update - including the long-awaited arrival of a Harpoon so you can, yeah, hook into someone esle's treasure chest. Plus, land traps, new enemies, the ability to take out another ship's mast, capstan or even wheel.
It all sounds damn impressive, and with more details and info on the way - we're keen to dip our toes back into Sea of Thieves.
