Twenty years ago the release of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace saw the long dormant franchise return to the big screen. And small screen, with the arrival of Star Wars Episode I: Racer on N64, PC, and Sega Dreamcast. Recreating the high-speed races from the film, it was in many ways one of the best Phantom Menace tie-ins in.
Which is saying a lot, because you could buy just about anything with Star Wars Episode 1 branding in 1999. The game, which is still well worth playing and available via GOG.com, features some dated visuals - which is why this fan-remake by RobJin in Unreal Engine 4 looks so impressive.
Limited to the Mos Espa, Tatooine race track - it's playable and available to download here (although the link is being overwhelmed with download requests at the moment). Although a work-in-progress fan project, that may or may not evolve much further, it definitely looks great. And really, makes the prospect of a remastered version of the original an enticing one.
