Late
last year at a conference Microsoft's head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, casually dropped a little nugget that the company was looking at reaching an audience of billions not millions. In order to do this that would mean Xbox service like Game Pass and its upcoming streaming Project xCloud popping up on PCs and mobile devices. And potentially the
Nintendo Switch too.
In a new interview over at
GeekWire, Phil once again talked about this potential future.
"We want to bring Game Pass to any device that somebody wants to play on,” Spencer said. “Not just because it’s our business, but really because the business model allows for people to consume and find games that they wouldn’t have played in any other space.”
Adding that hardware isn't where the money is made, it's software.
"The business inside of games is really selling games, and selling access to games and content in means like that is the fundamental business. So if you open it up, the more often people can play, the more they’re enjoying the art form. It increases the size of the business."
Naturally, it's xCloud and streaming service is still a while off - with trials across various cities expected to roll-out later in the year. In the immediate future though, thanks to recent findings
that revealed native Xbox One titles running on Windows 10 is already happening - we can probably expect to see a major expansion for Xbox Game Pass into the PC market sometime soon. And yeah, potentially to the Nintendo Switch too.
