With the surprise launch of free-to-play battle royale Apex Legends being the Titanfall-related game that the studio has been working on for the past couple of years. That and the still very mysterious Jedi: Fallen Order. In a recent interview
with Eurogamer (and other outlets), Respawn has advised that it's currently not working on Titanfall 3.
With lead producer Drew McCoy responding to the question with, "There are some people who think there are too many battle royale games or it's a fad, the world thinks we're making Titanfall 3 and we're not - this is what we're making". Adding that the reason for the surprise announcement/release combination is to avoid speculation and simply let the game speak for itself.
With full awareness that Apex Legends is free-to-play, published by EA, and features loot boxes. And that trying to market that for several months prior to launch would have been a steep uphill battle. Another reason many have speculated that a Titanfall 3 isn't currently in development also comes down to the use of Valve's Source engine, which is starting to show its age. It's use in the multiplayer focused Apex Legends, building off the tech seen in Titanfall 2 makes sense. But would probably look less impressive in a cinematic shooter circa 2020.
In other behind the scenes news, the interview also sheds light on the reasoning behind no titans and wall-running in Apex Legends. Two features that were apparently in early builds but interfered too greatly with strategy and tactics surrounding the new Legends and their abilities.
