Which was to be expected if you look at the continued success of each major iteration of Rockstar's now two major titles in Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. Grand Theft Auto V still holds the retail sell-through record for its first three days at over $1 billion, however, its release fell on a Tuesday, while Red Dead Redemption 2's fell on a Friday, with the open-world outlaw epic raking in more than $725 million in its first three days.

So, technically Red Dead Redemption 2 does have the biggest "opening weekend", if you're taking into account when each game was released at retail. But no matter which way you look at it, those numbers are astronomical.

The game is also the highest ever pre-ordered game on the PlayStation Network, has the highest day one sales and the highest sales over three days on Sony's digital store. No data from Microsoft was provided by the team (likely due to an agreement keeping the PlayStation brand front and centre of the game's internal data, despite it looking best on Xbox One X for running in native 4K).
An epic tale of honor and loyalty set in the dying days of the outlaw age, Red Dead Redemption 2 follows Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang as they rob, steal and fight their way across the rugged heartland of America in order to survive. Following a botched robbery in the western town of Blackwater, the gang is forced to flee and, with federal agents and the best bounty hunters in the nation massing on their heels, deepening internal divisions threaten to tear the gang apart, leaving Arthur to make a choice between his own ideals and loyalty to the gang who raised him.

Told across the deepest and most expansive Rockstar world to date, Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar’s first game built from the ground up for new generation hardware, and seamlessly blends gameplay and storytelling in a completely new way to deliver the experience of living as an outlaw in a notorious gang.

This should be a slap in the face for developers and publishers who say that people don't want single player games. If they really have a good idea and implement it well, then things like this could happen.

Absolutely BladeRunner, I mean look at The Witcher 3, Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyessy -- all three of them were commercial successes and all three were single-player focused games with extra effort piled in, I think the market is starting to talk and devs are starting to react, Battle Royale stuff aside

yeh but the production costs on games like this are massive. Like hundreds of millions of dollars.

I was talking about this game to a few people the other day and guessed it might make a billion dollars in its first week.

Those companies only use that as an excuse. When in reality its because they have to meet investors goals on time and its much easier to do so by throwing out a multiplayer product that is festered with microtransactions then it is to spend the time making a quality single player game that would garner the popularity to sell massive numbers and make that kind of profit.

Look what EA's got Bioware doing with Anthem... Once they have this the foundation will be set. EA will want sequels to keep the money flowing.

That I'll almost certainly never play. I have a backlog as big as yo momma on the PC before I even think about branching out to consoles (with the exception of RDR2).

Maybe, but I think you are underestimating the amount of work that goes into making an epic like RDR or GTA vs the average typical single player game which might only have 10-12 hours of content. There's a reason GTA games are like 5 years apart, and there are plenty of single player games that most people never hear of because they're dwarfed by things like this (and the multiplayer games).

I still feel like there are plenty of great SP games, even though I barely play any. I loved the Batman Arkham series for example; aside from GTA they're one of the very few SP games I've played & finished in like the last ten years.
