As we sit here awaiting the 'maybe it's coming' announcement of the Nintendo 64 Classic Mini from Nintendo, Sony sweeps in with the welcome and awesome surprise that is the PlayStation Classic - a mini PS One console that will launch later this year pre-loaded with 20 games.

Including classics like Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms.

Almost 25 years ago, the original PlayStation was introduced to the world. Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, it was the first home console in video game history to ship 100 million units worldwide, offering consumers a chance to play games with real-time 3D rendered graphics in their homes for the first time.

The PlayStation Classic will be roughly 45% the size of the original console and will come with a HDMI cable to connect to a TV or monitor, a USB cable, and two controllers for multiplayer and co-op. In terms of output the announcement notes that all original games will be playable in their original format - so we should expect near-perfect emulation without and additional filtering or updates.

The PlayStation Classic will be out December 3 in Australia carrying a RRP of $149.99 AUD.
