A while back ex-Valve and Half-Life 2 writer Marc Laidlaw outlined the plot points for the never-to-be-seen-but-we're-still-waiting-for Half-Life 2: Episode 3. Naturally, the chances of the game ever coming out at this point in time are basically 0. Which is where Project Borealis steps in, with a now finished script and development underway on what we might as well call the unofficial Half-Life 2 Episode 3.

As per the latest update on the project, "We’re proud to announce that the first full draft of the Project Borealis script has now been finished! The writing team has taken the plot points outlined in Marc Laidlaw’s Episode 3 and fleshed out the details and gameplay elements into a full and engaging script". But as is the case with any large-scale or ambitious fan-project things are still quite early on, with most of the tangible work still in the testing phase.

That being said, the project is looking for a number of contributors across a number of fields and so far has been able to produce some impressive concept art and even music.

Exhibit A.

Exhibit B.

As per the official information over 70 people are contributing the the development so far, which is an impressive number. For more head to the official Project Borealis site.
