After it reached the one million milestone back in 2015. Development on the massively multiplayer space game began way back in 2011 with an original release window of 2014. Since that time the scope of the game has grown where it now includes a separate and standalone single-player release called Squadron 42. with the core Star Citizen still in Alpha.
This is not a knock against the project, as something this massive and all-encompassing could only exist after several years of development effort. Frustratingly though we still have no idea when a beta or full release might happen, outside of the existing developer roadmap
for features and alpha content.
But, the two million backer milestone is quite the achievement as is the over $180 million USD in crowdfunding raised so far. Star Citizen lead Chris Roberts posted a letter
to to celebrate the achievement.
As Star Citizen has continued to grow over the years, so has the community in just as many astonishing and encouraging ways. The backers remain the foundation of this project and a beacon to the entire gaming industry and beyond. You are proving that PC games, space sims, and a willingness to push these artforms into new realms of innovation are alive and well, with more exciting possibilities than ever before. With two million people (and counting) inspiring and counting on us, the Star Citizen team is more galvanized than ever in our efforts.
Here's hoping Star Citizen gets a full release before the decade is out.
